This weekend, Value Electronics is running a shootout of Blu Ray players. I'm starting this thread so that we might possibly get some feedback from this event. I know that there are seats available for anyone wanting to attend at this late date. The show will be Sep 14 at 11AM and Sep 15 at 7 PM.

The details, based on the VE site are as follows. (Note: this is a PDF file 1.64 mb.

2008 Blu Ray shootout

I have to thank Robert for sponsoring this event for my birthday - Sep 14.

The competition will be

Pioneer BDP-51

Pioneer BDP-05

Panasonic BD50

Samsun 1500

Sony S350

Sony PS3

What a great idea. I know people will hate me for suggesting this, but what about a PS3? I'm getting tired of hearing that the PS3 is reference quality. Also, there are enough people out there who want to upgrade from PS3s (myself included) that a direct, scientific comparison would carry a lot of weight.

Also, it is too bad that the new Panny players will not be available

I have no problem including the PS3, but I think the 3800 should be reserved for a future shootout of the multi $$$$ units. I don't know, I imagine Robert is keeping this to dedicated units. A PS3 would be interesting though.

I think what we'll find out is that with 1080p24, other than load times, all the units perform about the same as far as picture quality is concerned.

What we won't know is how things like analog audio out compares among players that offer this feature.

In any event, I'm holding off on buying a player till after the shootout and comments are posted. You just never know what might pop up that'll make a difference. What's another 3 days for a player that you hope you can keep for a while.

Dan,

That's probably Sunday and Monday which seems odd as the plasma shootout was Friday night and Saturday.

I see the Sony S550 listed - is that correct? It makes sense based on the competition listed but it's been stated all over the place (including the Sony website) that the 550 isn't supposed to be released for another month or so. I understand Robert could have gotten an early one from Sony but I just wanted to confirm. I sure hope it is the 550 as I, and a lot of others on here, are interested in that player and this will give me an early chance to decide if I want to wait for this player or look for something else.

Edit - if it is the S550, can/will the unit be opned to see what chipset it is using? Rumors go between the NEC chip (same as in the S350) or the Sigma Rev C.

hopefully there will be a future shootout between the Pioneer 09, the Denon 3800 (or its successor), the Sony 5000ES, and maybe even the upcoming Oppo. thanks for doing this robert.

Definately. That is the conclusion I have reached from my comparison between the BD30, PS3, and Sony (cant remember which one as I only had it for testing purposes briefly) players I have had in my HT. Cant tell the dif between them at 1080/24p.

If you can't get a Sony S550, I would suggest the S350.

I'd also like to see a PS3 in the mix.

I will be interesting in hearing (or seeing?) Kevin Miller's test results on color output on these players since we've heard reports at one time or another that some units have incorrect color to one extent or the other.

Also, Robert, any way you can have this streamed over the net again like the Plasma shootout?

I know that the stated objective is to test BD playback, but it would be good to at least look at SD upconversion/playback.

I'd love to see the PS3 thrash the non-game-playing-standalones, especially those that are hundreds of dollars more expensive.

Well probably after a few glasses of plonk I'd imagine the results will be somewhat skewed anyway and this will be a non-issue.

Too bad the Oppo and some of the higher end units won't be out when this takes place. I'd be very interested in seeing how the Oppo compares to the higher end units being released. Maybe next time.

Will it be a Blind test?

We'll need Robert to jump in and speak on that.

For those of us that can't make it this event, it would be nice if a grid chart would be setup and posted in the beginning of this thread to show us how these players stacked up against each other.

Example:

BDP 51 BDP 05 Sam 1500..... etc

Load time XX sec XX sec XX sec......ect

PQ 1= poor 8 8 8

10 = Exellent

(1080P/24)BD

PQ 1= poor 8 8 8

10= Exellent

(1080i/60) video

SQ 1= poor 8 8 8

10= Exellent

(Bitsteam)

You get the idea, I think this would really add value to all the work that VE is doing.

Thanks

If Robert could hand out a sheet similiar to this to each of the attendees, maybe we could get an average to post in this fashion. I'll be happy to add it, but it will depend on the type of results we get and in what format. I also will be unable to attend (live in Mo - 1200+ miles), hence this thread.
