Value of using Rear Surrounds in my Set Up

200 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  Robert A. Fowkes

Because I have a Denon 5700, I added an additional pair of Mirage OM-R2s to the rear of my system (silly, I admit). So I now have a pair on the side walls and a pair on the rear wall. However, the rear pair are directly above (not behind) the listening position(s). Given this close positioning, would it be worth switching to any of the various new formats which provide a rear surround? Your opinions are appreciated. My preliminary assessment is probably not.

I, too, have a DENON 5700 and I added a second pair of speakers (M&K ss150THX surrounds in direct firing mode) to the back of my Home Theater for music. Overkill? Maybe, maybe not. I will say that I don't use the rear pair very much because ~>90% of my "listening" involves watching movies but at least I have some matched speakers already in the house if and when I move to one of the newer sound formats that requires more than two surround speakers.

In other words, even though I don't use the rear speakers as often as I thought I would I don't feel I wasted my money.

Your mileage may vary.
