I've not done this before so I just wanted to ask if what I am thinking is correct...

What I want to do is watch some VHS tapes though my HTPC and projector.

HTPC = Radeon9500pro, SB Live - spdif to reciever

I've done some research and I think the following will work ->

:: Buy Hauppage WinTVgo and install.

:: Install Dscaler

:: Connect VCR (via componant) to WinTVgo via reciever, connect audio to receiver (stereo RCA connection)

My questions are:

:: Will I get an audio / video lag by running my audio direct to the reciever, do I need to process the audio through the HTPC - if so how is this done?

:: I run a 16:9 desktop and screen (1280x720)... dScaler should have no problems running 4:3 video tapes in the correct aspect ratio full screen right? (I don't want anything in a window - just fullscreen and black bars left/right)

I don't need excellent quality (I'm using VHS as a source so I don't expect much) but this should suffice for my needs --- my need is that I can't wait for 2 series of Red Dwarf per year on DVD heheh.

Thanks!

I assume you mean connect by composite from VCR to WinTV.

Yes, this will work, it's how I watch VCR now. I run the audio straight from my VCR to my receiver, and there is no noticable lag between video and audio to me. DScaler will run 4:3 in a 16:9 Display - as long you set the Display is 16:9, it will all work fine.

Rick,

that will indeed work - That's the method that I use now as well. However, I would recommend one of the following cards:

1) flyvideo 2000

2) XCapture

3) I/O Magic PC PVR

Don't know much about the Hauppage WinTVgo, but the three I've listed all get good marks on this forum.

BTW - I currently use the I/O Magic, but I'm switching to the flyvideo soon.

Good Luck,

David

Thanks David - I remember you giving me that list a while ago! Unfortunately getting a card was one of those things I let slip and I never got around to ordering one :(

The tapes I ordered are here from Amazon, and I'm on strict instructions to get things read to view them asap (gotta keep the GF happy!). The WinTVgo seems popular on the dscaler boards, and I can pick one up on my way home at CompUSA for $49.

I should have thought ahead more (or at all) but who would have though that supersaver shipping from Amazon would be 2 days! (normally it's more like 2-3 weeks)

I'm sure the Hauppage will be fine... I think they also make some really high end capture cards, so I'm sure it'll work... I just don't know much about that particular one. I only rarely visit any other forums besides this one.

Good Luck, and let us know how that turns out...

People have also had luck with the MSI TV @ Anywhere card. I am deciding between the MSI or the Flyvideo 2000 or 3000. I want to do much the same as you are doing. Line double SVHS tapes. Also realize that with this setup you could fit 4:3 widescreen to 16:9 which is what I hope to do.

Okay... I must admit I am shocked... for one good reason::::

I installed the TV card. I installed the drivers. I installed dScaler.

I connected up the VCR, ran dScaler, told dscaler the aspect ratios I want, and the source location.

OMG it worked first time... no strange errors... no crashing... no sync issues... no playback issues... nothing... no problem...

it

just

worked

I'm not sure I can deal with this... its too freaky... I'm scared.
