Hi,

I just got Verizon FiOS. When I got it, I thought to myself, "I don't care to watch HD channels, so I won't pay the extra $9.99/month for a HD STB."

So I got just the SD STB.

Now my question is...if I buy a HD STB or a HD DVR off of E-Bay, Craigslist, or from a friend (specificially if I buy: Motorola HD DVR Cable Box Model # QIP7216), will it be instantly compatible? Is it plug & play?

Thanks.

NO... rent an HD capable STB from the provider. $5 more a month for HD channels shouldn't be a huge financial problem.

If you want HD channels, rent an HD STB. If you "don't care to watch HD channels", stay with the SD STB.

Any STB/DVR you purchase "online" will be shutdown and unusable.

This has been discussed many, many times over the years.

I think Obama should do something about this. We should have freedom of DVRs and STBs!

Yes considering the current state of our country and the world, freedom of DVRs should be a top priority.

Buy a TiVo , moxi, or build an htpc and rent a cable card for $2/mo. Those are some of your options to hold you over until the financial crisis is over and we achieve world peace. Then the government can concentrate on giving you more dvr freedom.

If you think about it... why not be more pissed off that if you purchase a TV with a "clear QAM" tuner, you shouldn't have to be forced to use an external tuner.

Contact your congressman and complain. Otherwise, not much else you can do.
