Very choppy Fusion hardware decoding

589 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  zenmaster70
I'm using v2.70.02 of the software and 4.9 CAT drivers. If I put the fusion software to software video decoding (highest level), there's no problem at all - nice smooth image, maybe a little soft. But, when I go to hardware decoding, I get a ton of pixelation/choppiness/stuttering.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions? Here's the setup:

PIV 2.4c (800 mhz bus/hyperthreading)

ABIT IS7-G motherboard

Soundblaster Live!

Fusion IIIQ card

512 meg RAM

ATI 9600 np

no O/C, but hyperthreading is on.

Thanks,

Chris

try changing the deinterlace method to weave.
this is a known problem with DxVA on the Radeon cards.

Do a search, and you'll find some suggestions. I would suggest simply leaving it on software., you'll come out ahead.

I use catalyst 4.6 and it's much better. However, the component dongle works much better with 4.10, so I live with using software.

I thought the ATI cards just had a problem with the image jumping up and down one line when on 1080i feeds... ? I'm sure I didn't have this problem before on 720p. I could probably try older versions of both sets of software/drivers, but wanted to see if I was alone.

CHris
My experience has been to use DXVA mode for 1080i programming and hardware mode for 720p to get the best results. Anyone else do this?
Actually, the worst results for me are happening on a 720p FOX broadcast.

Generally, I'm trying to avoid software mode as I usually do some work and watch the game at the same time. Hardware mode takes up bout 12% of the CPU whereas software is 60%.

Chris
I hear you.....I would suggest maybe go getting a nVidia card to solve the problem. According to dvico, they don't experience this problem. You could go as cheap as an MX440 based card (not the ones in the motherboard, though.

I was having some real stuttering issues with my FX5700 last week when watching baseball. Turned on software mode, worked better, though was still having some trouble. Which makes me think (and hope) it was a source problem (lots of splitters on my cable line before it get to the computer). Anyone else seen stuttering on the nvidia cards?
The Catalyst drivers have been giving me this problem since 4.6. Coincidentally, this was the the Catalyst set that was introduced to go with the new HDTV Wonder card. The only solution I have found is to stick with Cat 4.5. I get a beautiful, stutter-free DxVA-assisted decode.

I am also using the the latest Fusion app. I have tried doing a combination of older Fusion apps with the newer Cat drivers, but I get the same results. The problem is definitely a result of something ATI did to the drivers coinciding with the release of the HDTV wonder card. They probably 'optimized' something in the DxVA method to work better with their HD card and this caused it to start stuttering with the Fusion.

Rick-

Thanks for the note. I'll roll back to 4.5 and see if that helps the problem. I'm not using the dongle, so I don't need those improvements.

I have this choppy issue when tune into Fox HD the very first time after I start up the Fusion HDTV application. I can generally fix it by switching to an analog channel and back.

I am using Radeon 9800Pro with CAT 4.9. QAM256. DxVA decoder.
Wow - 4.5 worked like a charm. Thanks!

I have seem this as well. If you start up on a "P" channel (ABC or FOX) the 'auto' deinterlacing routine glitches for some reason. It is cured, as you said, by switching to a 1080i station and that seems to fix the problem for as long as you have the app running.

Glad it worked for you :) I keep trying every new Cat release in hopes that they will fix this problem (inadvertantly or purposely). No luck yet. I plan on getting a 6600GT as soon as they are available for AGP, so hopefully that will eliminate the issue for me (and maybe finally cure the 1080i DxVA jitter issue as well). We'll see.

Well, my big problem is that I'm running a 23" Cinema Display and this 9600np the only card that I've found will display the BIOS screen on it. I don't know if any of the Nvidia cards would or not... maybe that do, but I doubt it.

Chris
DXVA is choppy for me too. 6800GT with leaked 66.81 drivers. I just put it on software.

This is with the test program and demos available on their site.
I've had choppiness issues with the Fusion DXVA driver as well in 1080i and 720P. DVICO never explained this potential problem, so it took me awhile to figure out that going software-only was the best solution for my setup. I still think the video could be made to look more "fluid" (don't know the technical video term). I'm using an Fusion3 Gold, Athlon64 3000+, Radeon 9600SE card, and W2K.

I was also wondering if is was possible that another DXVA decoder could be used with the Fusion card, such as the one from Moonlight-Elecard? The Elecard MPEG2 decoder is apparently one of the best out there.

By this letter we are pleased to inform you that the pre-released version of the Moonlight-Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder with DirectX Video Acceleration support is now available for evaluation.

The DXVA supported evaluation you can download from the following link: http://www.moonlight.co.il/dxva_test.php
