I have had a big screen for awhile and always wanted surrond sound (but knew nothing about it). I have a directtv Dvr. I bought a Samsung HT-WP38 yesterday. I hooked the Direct tv dvr to the samsung and then connected that to my tv. I do not get any sound coming from the tv, is this normal? I was watching some tv and did not really notice anything special, I assumed it would be a ton better audio then just with my tv. The rear speakers don't have sound all the time, just mainly when there is background music.

Is surround sound mainly for movies and not really for regular tv?

Yep, though TV is using it more and more.

Even on movies, the rear channels are often used sparingly.

But when the surrounds ARE used, its often dramatic (like on action movies).

Most sound comes from the Center

Then some comes fromthe Left/Right fronts

and last is the surround.

Decent HTs can make regular TV come out of all the speakers, by using a sound mode.

I use a sound mode called "5 Channel Stereo" all the time, it basically uses the stereo signal that most broadcasts have, and sends it to all 5 speakers.
