Video/Audio skipping on HD files w/ ~5% CPU usage

780 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  cashel
Here's my HTPC setup:

Asus M3N78-VM

4gb DDR800 ram

AMD 4850e

Sound is being output through S/PDIF to receiver, Video through VGA cable to TV

Software:

XP SP3

CoreAVC 1.9.5.0

Latest FFDshow Tryouts (audio only, video disabled)

Latest Nvidia + Via audio drivers

Mediaportal & MPCHC for video playback

I've got DXVA enabled and CPU usage is ~5% for HD files, but the files will randomly skip/drop frames anywhere from a split second to a few seconds for movies. For TV shows, it'll sometimes skip through large portions of the show. When this happens, it skips both audio/video, and I get a lot of video artifacts until everything catches up with itself. I've reinstalled Windows 7 and XP numerous times, I've used different driver versions, used only MPCHC and its internal codecs, used various codecs/packs, nothing seems to work. However, with the way I have it setup now, I've seen the least amount of dropped frames/skipping so far, but it still does it enough to bug me. At this point I'm thinking it's got to be hardware, but what? Faulty Ram? Not adequate enough CPU? Faulty mobo/IGP? I bought this setup thinking it'd be adequate enough to handle 720P/1080P, but so far it's proven otherwise.

have you tried enabling the FFdshow video codecs?

In the past I have, but it still led to the same (if not worse) results. Plus, I thought FFDshow utilized the CPU more than the IGP? Regardless, I'll try it again when I'm in front of the HTPC in a day or two.

Here's the codecs I've tried (that I can remember):

Playing through MPCHC with its own internal codecs

Registering MPCHC's codecs and using that w/ MP and whatnot

FFDshow codecs

shark007 codec packs

CoreAVC (as I mentioned, using this in the setup I have now has given the best results, but it's still not perfect)

The specs sound good enough for HD playback, and 5% cpu usage indicates that it is. How about connecting to TV via DVI or HDMI, or using a different video player besides MPC

I'd rather stick with VGA if I can. The LCD I'm using (older 32" Westinghouse) only has 1 VGA, 1 HDMI, and 1 component. The HDMI is being used by the PS3, and the component is being used by the cable box. The receiver I've got doesn't have HDMI or any sort of PC input (only component, and I'd rather not have to deal with/buy a converter). I'll give HDMI a shot though to see if it works. I've used Mediaportal's internal player and WMP and they both do the same thing.
Could be a DRAM issue if it's not a software issue. Make sure it is running in dual channel (use CPU-Z to check it). Disable Cool'n'Quiet (in BIOS and Windows power management) and make sure memory is always running at (near) 400MHz (check with CPU-Z). Or even change the CPU to something better (HT 3.0; e.g. Ahtlon X2 7750, Athlon II X2 250) or buy a better graphics card.

Thanks, I'll try this as well when I'm in front of the computer. I know it says it's running dual channel when it POSTS and in BIOS. I should have mentioned earlier, I've already messed with Cool N Quiet both in BIOS and in Windows (7 anyway, specifically with the power profiles/CPU power, haven't messed too much with it in this install of XP yet). I'll throw CPU-Z on there when I get the chance and check everything out. Before I shell out cash for a new video card or CPU (you're the second one to recommend a 7750), I want to make sure that I've got nothing faulty with what I already have. I did some research before buying this upgrade, and thought that this would be plenty for what I was going to do with it.
