I'm wondering if its possible in any way to record cable from a set top box in thru a hdmi capture card on your Htpc? Is here any hacks or software, maybe fraps?, that will allow the recording of hdcp content?

Yes, AVerTV HD DVR. But you can't use the included software to do it so it's not really a "DVR"-type solution. Scheduling would be tough.

Why couldn't you just use the AVerTV type product with an hdmi in and run your hdmi out of your cable box and use an hdmi stripper before going in to the avertv to get rid of the hdcp?

It does support HDCP, which is to say that it does the key negotiation, displays the image/sound, and their own software will not let you record it. And they left a hole in the previous driver version that allows you to record it with 3rd-party software.

No 5.1 however.

Couldn't you just use regular dvr software to record, or would you have to use FRAPS?

Seems like a lot of trouble just to avoid using component.

I don't know what "regular DVR software" is, but you don't have to use Fraps. What you do need is an application that will access the correct DirectShow pins as some don't seem to allow you to select the proper audio line.
