I read somewhere that for HD your video card needs a least a 128bit memory interface?

Last night I swapped my 9800Pro with a 9600SE to see what would happen. It worked just fine at a 480i/p resolution, but at 1080i it would stutter and pause when viewing any HD content through my Fusion II.

The 9800 doesn't have any problem at 1080i. So the video card does play a big part in displaying smooth HD.

After a little searching:

Card / Memory Interface / Pipelines

9800Pro / 256 bit / 8

9600SE / 64 bit / 4

9600XT / 128 bit / 4

x800Pro / 256 bit / 12

x800XT / 256 bit / 16

x700Pro / 128 bit / 8

Does anyone know if the Memory Interface or number of Pipelines would be more important in HD playback?

The best quality HDTV picture comes from one of the Janus-based hardware decoders, for which the video card is irrelevant, because they use passthrough replacement of the video signal. Most of us use these hardware decoders. Be patient and perhaps you will find anothe Fusion user who can answer.
