Primarily to provide concurrent Audio and Video switching so that switching sources are done on one component only (receiver) vs multiple ones (receiver and display). That's my take. It also simplifies the wiring to the display in many cases.

My work friend and I are trying to settle an argument. What is the purpose of video in and outs in Receivers ?
