Since I have not seen any topic about this yet, I thought I would open one up. Doesn't it seem a bit useless to have added video style programming to the latest software version? I admit, this functionality makes replaytv a lot more versatile, and I will also admit that one day I may even have the need to use it, however, if I may be a bit presumptuous, did we not ALL by a DVR to make life easier, and to have to program our recorder for channels, and time again just brings back memories of the past.

I still have my VCR connected right there to the ReplayTV and seldom use it unless I want to transfer to tape. All I am trying to do is open up conversation on this matter. So............How does everyone expect to use this retro feature of ReplayTV? Let me and every one else know.

Manual Recording was one of the most requested features for ReplayTV.

It is needed by many people because some satallite services PPV guides do not show up on RTV. So by setting up a manual record those people can now record those shows.

It's also nice if for some reason or another, A user does not or cannot connect to RTV to download the channel guide. That person can then setup manual recordings.

It can also be setup to record from other input sources.

There are probably many other reasons.

Manual recording was heavily requested for a number of reasons.

1. VCRs can do it. You don't want a VCR to be able to do something that a PVR can't!

2. Sometimes you just need the fine control. ( common example: Tonight Show monolog only )

3. Prevents your investment from being a doorstop should something happen to Replay Networks.

I'm glad it's here.

For those of us with C-band satellites, manual recording is the only way that we'll be able to record off of them.

Actually if RPTV were to close up shop we still would be swigging in the wind. You cannot (from what RPTV said) manually set the clock which is a feature i would like to see added in future software versions. If i am wrong please let me know, this issue was a major sticking point when i purchased my 3060.

Thanks

This is a very interesting point. I would like to see clock setting added under setup.

Some time ago, lostboy developed the ability to have his Replay call his PC where he deciphered the protocol. Should Replay meet its demise, it would be nice to be able to have your machine phone home - literally - where you could feed and nurture it with time info as well as guide info you can pull off the net.

BTW, another approach to content mining is to pull the guide info from web sites, filter and alert as you please, and then use my.replaytv.com to program your machine.

I'll answer with how I have used it on my TiVo. Some reasons have been eliminated by additional features like padding and restricting to certain days of the week (combined with the fact that Replay restricts show based channels to near the same time.)

You still need manual recordings if you ever want to record part of a show. For example, I used it to record parts of the Olympics while still recording shows I wanted in the middle. Since the padding is a hard pad, a manual recording will be needed to force another show to start recording late.

You can use it if the guide is incomplete or inaccurate. One example that is unavoidable is for a sports that have a variable number of games depending on who wins. The guide probably can't be updated in time for those cases, the most recent caused people to miss new episodes of West Wing and Law and Order.

Also, I've used it twice to record something I heard about past the guide data date. Not that I couldn't record it when it showed up in the guide, but I didn't want to forget about it.

I concede. Apparently, the feature has been thought about for some time, and I can see (with the help of folks here) how it can be useful. I do not know if or when I would really use it, but I suppose it does not hurt to have the benefits of manual recording should the occasion arise. Would like to know how more of you think you will use the feature (might give me ideas).

One of the main reasons for implementing the manual record was to allow users to record a single first-run program and reject many reruns. In the Dallas area Star Treck: Voyager reruns are aired every day, and the first-run programs are aired every Wed with a repeat on Sun. Before manual recording, we could only exclude the 8+ hours of unwanted programming by setting up a single program record operation every week. If you forgot to do that, you missed the show.

The "Voyager Problem" has also been solved by the day-of-the-week settings. Doing it that way, you still get the program title.
