Videogame surround sound issue

327 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Version
I thought I may ask in this forum, but I have a 5760, and I just installed my athena rear speakers. Now I first tested it on the receiver, and sound came out of the back speakers where it should. I later installed a sound calibration dvd, and it said sound should be traveling to the back speaker ect... and it did.

Now when I play xbox games which are in dolby digital 5.1, my receiver picks up dolby digital surround sound, and also detects the speakers, left, right, center, now the other to on the receiver say SL, SR. Wouldnt that be side left side right? Why is it picking that up? I have the back speakers hooked up, I even tested them, and they are connected properly to the back speaker connects on my receiver, not the side surround speaker connects. However I cannot get sound out of the back speakers, the only way to get sound from those speakers is to put the receiver in 7 channel stero. Can anyone help me tell me what the problem maybe? I am guessing for some reason the xbox is outputting sound to side speakers, when it should be going to the back ones?

Can anyone help?

If you are running a 5.1 speaker set-up then SR and SL are simply your surround speakers. Use those connections on your receiver.

When you add rear surrounds (sometimes called center rear) for a 7.1 set-up, they get connected to the REAR surround out-puts on your receiver.

So.... just hook up your surrounds to the SR & SL connections, tell your receiver that you have 5 speakers in the set-up menu and you'll be good to go.

Hope this helps.

Take Care
5.1 is Center, Right, Left, Surround Right, Surround Left, Sub

7.1 adds Surround Back Right and Surround Back Left.

Sounds like everything is working properly.

If you want all the speakers to make noise layer DPL IIx over your DD 5.1 signal.
Do I have my speakers in the wrong setup then? I originally thought 5.1 was back, and 7.1 was side. My speakers are at the back wall.

Yes.

7.1 is the same setup as 5.1 except now you have two speakers in a 30-60 degree angle behind you.

No 5.1 includes the sides

7.1 adds the rears

The confusion is because in a 5.1 set-up you generally want to swing your surrounds behind you a bit to get better "surround" coverage. In 7.1 they can be moved up to the sides beause the new back surrounds will provide the rear coverage.

Check the Dolby charts for more details.
