I am considering the 21N but I have been kicking around the issue of displaying 4:3 images on a 16:9 screen.


Does the following make sense:


It would seem that if an XP21n was mounted at max zoom in a 16:9 set-up you should be able to just use the minimum zoom to show 4:3 images on the same screen without overshoot. Sanyo specs say the zoom ratio 1.3 to 1. If you have a 96" x 54" screen, a standard 4:3 image would want to be around 70" tall. If you take 70" and reduce it by 1.3 you would be at just under 54". This may be an ideal solution due to the fact that you will use the full rez no blanking etc. Whaddya think???

The other problem with this idea is that when zooming in or out most projectors have an offset which if the projector is mounted on the ceiling you don't have to place the lens in the center of where the screen is mounted, the lens can be at the top of the screen and still be centered top to bottom but, when you start using the the zoom I think you will always have to ajust the picture up or down. I'd wait for the 16x9 Sanyo.

I cannot see how you would get an image shift. I would think the image would shrink or grow proportionally on all sides. It is just a lens thing.

I tried to switch an XP21 between 16:9 and 4:3 on a 16:9 screen this morning. In 16:9 mode, the image is cropped on the top "and" bottom. So when you switch to 4:3, the image refills the equal size gaps on the top and bottom. At this point when you zoom all the way in, the top portion of the 4:3 image will fit within the 16:9 borders, but the bottom portion will stay several inches outside the screen border. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help. I guess that was just a remedy that was too easy... So of course it would not work!

I to wouldn't...unless, the 16x9 immage was at the location of the zoom offset.

Like that which was mentioned, on my Sharpvision, when I zoom the image, the top stays in the same place. The bottom and sides move. However, I have lens shift.


However, would this not put a greater burden on the motor and gears. I don't think it was meant to be zoomed in and out all the time?
