Viewing Distance for 50" Plasma

1260 Views 20 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  Elemental1
My living room is about 12' wide. So if I buy a 50' plasma, I will be about 8,9' away from the screen. I know the best viewing distance for the 50" is 10'. Does that mean I shouldn't get a 42" instead? Does anyone have experience with that?

Thanks.

There's already about three separate current threads about this that cover pro and con of both sizes. You should scan through the first few pages of posts and you'll find em ;)
I say sit 6 inches away from the screen but hey thats me....I like a bigger picture (im just joking)...you should be fine with either one, but thats opinion

at 8-9ft. I would say 42 inches, unless you are going to exclusively watch HD content, in which case 50 inches will be fine...

Definitely go by numbers and formulas. Also go by everyone else's recommendation, which will include every possible distance and situation imaginable. Whatever you do, don't go to a store and look at SD and HD material and determine what size looks best for your viewing distance. Do not trust your own vision and mind. And lastly, don't do what sillysam tells you to do. [/sarcasm off].

Yeah...I edited that post in the Pan sticky.

You must read it....hehe
i watch my 42" at 14', looks big to me, heck i had a 27" for years and i saw everthing fine, up to 20' is good for a 50"

A 50" in a 12' room will look really stupid

You will be fine with viewing a 50" PDP from a distance of approximately 8.5' ;)
I agree. You will be fine with a 50". I sit 10' and want to go bigger. My 42"'s in the bedrooms look tiny to me after watching the 50.
It will always look bigger in your home than it does in the store... and thats not a bad thing at all :D

If you can afford bigger, get bigger. You'll probably never see the comment on this board that "its just too darn big"... but you will see the comment "its too small, should have gone bigger" or "it feels small now, did not feel so small before"

Start about 15' in front of a 50" plasma in a store, then walk toward it until you start to resolve the pixel structure. Then if that distance is smaller than your room size, you will be fine with a 50". Do the same thing with a 42" and you will get a good feel for what the differences will be in your home.
I bought a 50" a couple days ago, sit about 9 feet away, and everything looks good to me. I tried a couple different distances with it and that distance seemed right.

You are a rarity; most people find the opposite. At 9' -> 10.5' a 50" looks great.
