viewing HD on PC over 1394 from STB ?

1536 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  vasyachkin
i have a HD set top box with firewire outputs (scientific atlanta 4250 from cablevision) and i would like to watch HD live on my computer over those 1394 ports

what combination of hardware/software do i need ?

would any 1394 adapter do ? is there any software that allows to watching HD live over firewire ( as opposed to recording video ) ?

thanks in advance !

I've always wanted to know this but been a little shy to ask
what's the benefit of watching live TV on the PC via firewire from the STB (if youre not interesting in recording)? Isn't it just easier to hook up the STB to a PC monitor directly? Is it because of special video processing on the PC? I actually had one of my STBs connected directly to a 19" monitor via DVI (with HDCP) and it looked pretty good.

first of all when i connected DVI from box to my 24" samsung desktop display it didnt look very good ... the picture became stretched vertically ... i know 24" EIZO can display 1080 with black bars but my samsung 244T just stretches it vertically

secondly ... get ready for it ... i actually want to be able to use my computer
while im watching TV

of course thats what i have a TV for ( also samsung, 1080P ) so i can work on computer while watching TV ... problem is the TV is also hooked up as a second display for the computer ( both displays connected over DVI ) so really when im watching TV im losing one of my two displays

if i can get firewire to work i can then have both of my displays handling my desktop and at the same time be watching TV on either of them.

and last but not least, by using firewire i want to bypass all the processing of the horrible scientific atlanta STB and in the process gain the ability to control things like gamma etc using nvidia control panel.

Oh okay.. now I understand, you also want to watch what you're already watching (on your big screen) also in a window. That's completely understandable. I watch a lot of my TV in a window too... I'm watching HowardTV On Demand in a window as I'm typing this message
....going full screen after this message...
