I am interested in getting a 61" DLP Rear Projection unit. I have a wall unit that stands about 36" tall, and I am thinking about putting the TV on this unit. Is there a problem with having the TV that high? Should I get a TV stand that is shorter instead of using the wall unit as a stand?

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I would recommend against it. My room is 17X17, and I have a spankin' new 60XS955 Sony on a stand that is 23 inches high. From a seated position (10 ft away) I am looking up at it. The center of the screen is about 4 inches above my head when seated, and I can just peer over the set when standing next to it. Its a beautiful set, but its like having the obelisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey right there in the room with you. The stand that is designed for this unit is about 17 inches high, and I think that height would be perfect. Not only do you have the "looking up" factor to deal with, you have the factor of the unit dominating the room. A lower stand cures both of these problems.

Yes, for the best possible picture, you should have the middle of the screen at or about eye level.

A 36" stand is way too tall for a rear projection set unless you are Yao Ming or Shaquille O'Neal. You should be looking at a stand that is roughly half that height.

I have a 50 in sony lcd that is on a stand that is custom built of oak and is 17in in height. This height puts it at eye level center. Most if not all displays should be eye level center for optimum viewing. IMO even 23in is too high and you are looking up while seated. This of course takes into account that seating etc is not elevated, but starts at floor level.
