viewing height, wanting to mount plasma!

545 Views 5 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  netarc
Hey guys, im really wanting to mount my plasma, but to pre-emp the whole situation, i'd like to know how high i should go, ive seen alot of setups where theyve mounted the plasma high, to make it stand out in the room and for people to go "oooh" at it, but when watching these sets when sitting down on the couch, i feel the plasma is not mounted correctly for the seating....

So how far up/down from my eyes should i mount the screen, a general rule of thumb would really help.

Using for gaming/watching hd, from news/sports to movies...

thanks

Good question.

I am fairly new at this too and I have my LCD mounted on a custom stand that is 32" tall. That puts the center of the TV screen at about 36-38" from the ground. It's not too high but it's higher than my old CRT was.

Personally I never liked looking down at the TV. I think flat-panels are meant to be mounted slightly higher than normal. When Im on the couch, you are looking slightly "up" at the TV, but not too ridiculous.

So.... try mounting it so when sitting the TV is about 2-3 inches higher than your head.

Just my 2 cents....

What's the viewing distance? Do you have video cabinet? Make a template, according to the TV dimension, out of the news paper and tape it to where you want to view. Leave it there for few days and see if you like. My viewing distance is 11' & my 50"-plasma mounted 45" off the floor from the bottom edge of the plasma, and my neck has no problem so far ;-)

Well, the first thing you have to consider is how is the TV going to be viewed. Always from in a seated/reclined position on a chair/sofa? Or maybe you like to sit on the floor to play video games? Or like in my case it going to be used while I am working out (ie standing)? If you you only use it while sitting in a chair a good place to start is with the bottom 1/3 of screen at eye level.
I have mine mounted ~3" from the ceiling, and have not had any problem with discomfort. It requires only a (very) few degree eye or head tilt from the couch 11 feet away.

I put it up as high as I could get it, because stuff fits under it that way, but also because I have a lift-top coffee table with a 24" wide-screen PC monitor on it, with the table in the up position, I can easily see the PDP over the PC monitor, even when sitting low in the couch.

I wouldn't do it any other way, now that I've lived with it that way for a few weeks.
I believe a general rule of thumb is that your seated eye-level should be approx 1/3 of the way up the screen.
