I have a Panasonic HS-2000 un modified, with the current software upgrades -- it has started to hesitate when I watch one program when it is recording another -- with a slight pulses of hum that sounds like the hard disk is churning -- especially in the beginning of a program. Any suggestions -- would upgrading to another disk cure it? This thing is way off warrenty.

Hearing strange sounds from inside the Showstopper is unusual and likely an indication of pending hard drive failure. On that alone you should consider replacing it.

It is very possible a failing hard drive could cause the lag you noticed.
