don't flame, this one was already a remake from Kurosawa. I don't mind remakes, if well done !!!!! ( this is a sine qua non condition ).
I think he would do well in the role of Yul. As for other characters,maybe:

BRAD PITT ( ok, he's a bigger star... any other idea ?)
EWAN MC GREGOR
JOSH HARTNETT
HEATH LEDGER
there's also guys like WILL SMITH, BEN AFFLECK, JOHNNY DEPP etc. it's either a higher level category or a medium category ( the above ) though PITT and DIESEL are top category of course.
the bad guy: difficult, mmmh... someone with mexican potential. maybe DEL TORRO ? or someone older. Andy Garcia ? he has to be spanish speaking-sounding-looking.
the movie should be :
HEROIC
GRUESOME
VIOLENT
VERY WESTERN FEELING ( you have the feel in the late 19th century )
A TERRIFIC SCORE
INTELLIGENT DIALOGUES
AWESOME ACTION SCENES with thunderous bass (dynamite, horses) and gunshots
SOME FEELINGS ( for the peasants, for the wifes or girlfriends if any left behind ).
very very minimal humour ( virtually nil ).
sdme calm but deep moments, like in OUATITW.
this movie should be adult, should revive the spirit of THE WILD BUNCH, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (OUATITW) etc.
director: LAWRENCE KASDAN ( he proved it beautifully with SILVERADO) we need someone with western experience. Or Clint directing ?
music: (crucial !) BRUCE BROUGHTON ? TREVOR RABIN ? JOHN WILLIAMS ? please no fancy shmooncy modern stuff. stick with experimented guys.
film shooting format: Panavision !!!!
studios: COLUMBIA ? FOX ? (I want dts ) DREAMWORKS ?
