Here's the breakdown for people short on time.

-- $999 MSRP

-- 1080p, 5000:1 contrast, 1800 lumens

-- 2 HDMI, 1 component, RS-232 control, 12v trigger

-- 29 db noise level

-- 3000 hr lamp life

-- Texas Instruments' S450 chip/light-engine design with Dark Chip II technology

That should pretty much sum it up. This product will send waves through the market. Hopefully everybody else will respond with lower prices across the board.

Does Vivitek make good projectors?

In my limited research over the past few years, I think the only other time I heard of them was regarding LCD projectors if I remember correctly.
this might be my next outdoor theater projector.
Not bad at all. DC2 can throw up a dam nice image and the price falls into the mass market point. Does it have a glass lens and/or sealed path.
This could be the projector to replace my Mitsubishi HC1500(720p).
i actually thought its one of those with LEDs.... i guess not :-(
I wouldn't get too excited for 1080p at this price point as things will certainly have to be sacrificed and my first guess is a lens of reasonable quality ... but who knows
.

Thats generally true, but sometimes a company wants to break into a market bad enough that they are willing to a product as a loss leader for a while to get in the door.
If 1080p projectors follow the standard curve of technology in the marketplace prices will continue to fall as more manufacturers put products onto competitive retail "shelves". Remember when 720p was the leading edge?

Once multi-dimension a.k.a. 3D becomes the HD Theater standard as it certainly will over the next three years "plain old" 2D 1080p will become 2nd tier and prices will plummet and so this cycle repeats again and again.

I imagine that a competitor to 3D will be 120 inch flexible thin screens that can be easily hung on any wall making front projection obsolete for many current HT applications/viewing rooms.

Just posting what ya'll already know - technology keeps churning out newer or better/different and the New becomes the leading edge with the higher price points - until it becomes Old compared with - somthing newer/better.

I want my holodeck!
I'm thinking that 1080p prices will naturally follow competitive prices. To kick things off, how about 47" LCD TVs which are now around $1000 as a benchmark competitor? How do the price graphs compare over last several years? I'm having trouble finding historical pricing. Implicit in this is my belief that projector prices are highly controlled by a few suppliers. $1000 isn't surprising since we had street prices of around $1400 over a year ago (Mitsubishi 1080p HC4900).
I've got an HD70 that needs a new bulb. I wonder if this Vivitek would be a better option than buying a new bulb.
I just noticed that best buy is carrying vivitek business projectors now. Maybe there will be a chance they will carry this one as well. $999 plus a 10% off coupon would be pretty nice.

12% if you're a reward member...plus you get some reward points.
This could be a nice little pj for someone new the market or not that demanding on pq. Hopefully this will be at Cedia.

I don't know what Vivitek's track record is with finished pjs, but their parent company has had a hand in DLPs for years.

Thats the same thing I thought, this isn't a start up their parent company has got some serious cash behind them and I think a very nice track record. You never know till its out, but my money is on this being a very nice bang for the buck PJ, we need more info but I'll be following it and if anything the 1080P price war is ON.

HAHA!! And the 120" flexible screen will role up like a window blind.

has anyone found any specs as far as throw distance and offset for this pj yet?
There 2 versions of this projector. One is $999 and the other is $1499..

Differance is the expensive one has isf calibration and has lens shift only available through custom installers.

As soon as I can put speakers behind that roll up screen I'm sold, but I'll be curious to see how they solve that one... ^_^
