Owners of Vizio SmartCast TVs will likely be glad to hear that the platform has been updated to offer convenient access to Amazon Video. This popular source for streaming entertainment is rolling out right now to 2017 Vizio P-Series and M-Series Ultra HD displays and will become available on other Vizio SmartCast series displays (like the 2017 E-Series) later this summer.

This announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise given that Google's Chromecast forms the foundation of SmartCast, and up until now the Chromecast platform has not supported Amazon Video. This is the most interesting part of the news and is significant because Amazon has a sizeable library of UHD content, including HDR.

In its press release, Vizio notes that Amazon Video is a place where consumers can purchase or rent thousands of movies including popular titles. Furthermore, it notes that users can join Amazon's prime video for unlimited access to various shows—including Amazon original series—and many movies. New Prime customers can take advantage of a 30 day free trial.

"With the recent launch of SmartCast TV, one of the things we're most excited about is providing consumers with added entertainment options," said Matt McRae, Chief Technology Officer, Vizio. "Amazon Video brings an array of content options to the screen, all accessible on the traditional remote via the Amazon Video button. We're glad to continue to bring in-demand content and solutions to our customers."

A really cool thing about Amazon video is it broadens the selection of 4K ultra HD content available to SmartCast users. And, as Vizio notes, the app is accessible directly from the display. There is no need for an external streaming device.
