Anyone else use the internal tuner of the newer Vizio VOJ lineup connected to an AVR using the optical output? It works but every minute or so the sound will dropout for a split second.

the same optical cable worked flawlessly with my previous TV hooked up. Just tried a second cable, same issue exists.

YES! I bought the Vizio VOJ32 right before it was discontinued 2 years ago at a killer price for a bedroom TV. I decided last week I needed a soundbar to go with it which meant utilizing the optical output for the first time ever, and what do you know...I have this problem. It will be funny if anyone else reads this thread now that it is 5 years old, but friend, you are no alone or crazy...my Vizio has the problem too. If anyone has a fix, let us know!

No solution found. What I did was I bought a DTVPAL OTA DVR and ran that to my receiver.

That worked great for years.

BTW I still have my Vizio and it still looks super.

I'm glad you found a solution. This is just a bedroom TV, so I'll probably just go back to the TV sound before I throw a bunch of money at it. I thought of the OTA tuner idea, but those are just so expensive for what you get. I just don't want to settle for analog/2 Channel sound (even though ultimately a soundbar is outputting 2.1)...but we'll see. Tell me, do you have any idea of ALL of these models have this problem, or if we just got lucky? The reason I ask is because my dad has the same TV, but he has no need for the use of the optical output and would be willing to trade if we confirmed that his worked.

I don't know but my guess would be its a firmware issue rather then an isolated issue with just our 2 sets.

If your dad is close enough take your sound bar and test it on his set.

I wish I could just go test my soundbar on his set, but he's four hours away. I'm going to be thinking through a way to test a working soundbar or powered speaker of some type on his set soon. I would suspect firmware too, but then again, you would think in the long time this TV was manufactured it would have surfaced more prominently to Vizio and initiated a fix. Do you remember if you ever contacted Vizio?

Never did…I just moved on to plan B, the DTVPAL.

It would have been a waste of time because I did a support chat this morning with them. As is unfortunately typical, I got all sorts of ridiculous, and even illogical information. I was told it was a "compatibility" issue, then later was told that PCM will "always output 5.1 surround" even over optical when I tried to explain that using PCM audio is only 2-channel. It sure is tempting to use this as an excuse to buy a new TV on Black Friday, but alas, most of those TV's are strip-down and have no optical output! Man, I wish I could just trade TV's with someone who doesn't need that output...I'd even go 720p on a 32 inch now that I understand resolutions better. That TV would make a KILLER computer monitor. So do you still have that television?
