Vizio VW37L - Hooking up to sound receiver?

5603 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Higherthought420
I'm looking into buying a new sound receiver and am curious since the Vizio does not have an HDMI output what's the best choice in looking for a sound receiver?

I have an xbox 360 that I was going to connect via optical. so that's an easy one.

but what do you do about the cable box? I have it hooked up via a DVI > HDMI connection to the vizio, while using RCA connections for sound.

next up is the apple tv - I have that running to the vizio via hdmi.

finally I have the Nintendo Wii. I have that hooked up to the vizio via component.

so how do I hook all this mess up to a sound receiver? or what do I look for?

thanks so much for the help.

Well all those uints have Optical connections, so if your HT reciever has optical inputs just use them. The easyest way though it for a higher dollar reciver that does HDMI and Component video switching. Mine only does component so I have one set of component out to the tv and use the reciever as the video switcher.
If you don't mind switching the audio and video separately, just run the video straight to the TV and the audio to the receiver. You would be better off hooking up the cable box via optical or digital coaxial, though. You aren't going to get DD 5.1 from the stereo RCAs.
Another option especially if you recieve HDTV from a cable/sat service your STB should have HDMI output if your new AVR has 1 or 2 available HDMI inputs you could do a single cable solution and get the full sound and picture quality that your service offers

XBOX360 could be hooked up through component and an optical cable let the AVR switch between sources

and the Wii can also be hooked up by component and RCA for stereo sound again let the reciever handle the switching and/or up-converting if available

as far as apple tv I honestly couldn't even make a suggestion I'm not familiar with it

I don't understand what you are saying. I have this TV and right now, am just using the TV speakers as I don't see any way to hook up our surround sound like we had it with our other TV. The TV does not have an optical audio plug. I just want to have my TV sound go through my external speakers, no xbox involved. Any suggestions?

what I was saying in that post was the OP is looking to purchase a surround receiver that in a sense will be the hub of all audio and source switching with just one cable going out of the receiver to the HDTV set preferably HDMI or DVI

and every source going into the receiver does that make sense

In your case MaryS if you are just trying to get surround or stereo from a cable/sat box then you would use the best connection you have available from you cable/sat box send it to your receiver then one cable from you receiver to your HDTV

so it looks kind of like this:

line in wall--->into input on STB (set top box)

STB's best available connection(HDMI,DVI,Component...)---->into the proper spot on your receiver

from reciever's best available connection out -----> HDTV's input and there you have it sound from your speaker set up and picture on your HDTV
