I've been digging around and read somewhere that VLC (Mac port) has no hardware acceleration... Is this true? (That would explain why Apple DVD Player uses less juice.) Are there any plans for this in future releases?

The Windows version doesn't have any HW accelleration either. It's all software on both platforms.
