Volume During Commericals

1305 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  igreg
The wife and I find it very irriatating when the volume suddently increases during commericals. Has anyone found a way to eliminate this problem? HDMI is used from our DTV HD Receiver to our AV Receivor then to our television.

Wait for Dolby Volume or buy a yamaha receiver. Dolby volume is supposed to do volume leveling without degrading the sound quality even in the lower frequencies. However, there are no plans to put it in receivers currently(One of the guys from Dolby said that on a podcast).

Yamaha's night mode works quite well for volume leveling but it eliminates almost all Bass.
I programmed a button on my harmony remote to decrease the volume by a specified amount, so at least it is only one button.

On most AVR's you can get around it if the main content is two 5.1 and the commercials are in 2.0, becasue they can do channel levels by source and sound mode.

Night mode helps, but the consequences aren't worth it.

The worst part? The better / more dynamic your system is the worst this issue will seem.

What AVR's can do it by source or sound mode? My Yamaha is all or nothing. There are some Yamaha's that let you choose two different night modes(Music or Cinema) but I don't think they allow it to vary by input. Harmon Kardon's night mode is limited only to certain sources and with a lot of commercials going HD you really need to apply the volume leveling to all audio types.

From what Dolby has been claiming, Dolby volume is the true answer! It just might take a few years before we see it. In the meantime try on of the Yamaha receivers that allows you program the amount of volume leveling and Bass reduction that is done. The newer Yamaha's actually work pretty well for this.

Here are some articles on Dolby Volume.

I stopped watching TV 15 years ago because of the obnoxious commercials. Completely eliminated the problem

My Denon 4802 was pure awesome with this. By source and mode on the channel levels.

On my new Sr7001, it may work, but I did the single button on the Harmony remote and have not explored the channel level options.

Some times the channel levels seem global by mode, others times they don't on the SR7001

JohnnDenver,

Did you also program the volume to increase by the same amount decreased?
No, but my wife sure wants me too. So I better "Get'r done"....

Besides volume, what is particularly annoying is commercials that contain a loud ear-piercing beep....once I am aware of the commercial I can turn down the volume to avoid the ear piercing sound, except for those commercials that purposely put the beep at the instant the commercial starts. No way to avoid. The latest culprit is five-hour energy. Gets my ears ringing every time it comes on.

Yeah, this is in reaction to Ken in programming who threatened to ban me from AVS if I post a thread that already exists, even if archived.
