Volume levels with new amplifier

Hi all,

Had more of a question than an issue. I have a Denon x3400H that I was running in 5.1.2 mode. Recently bought a 7 channel amp that I have connected to it via pre-outs. Re-ran Audyssey and everythings working great. It just that I feel the volume seems "lower" for any given setting on the volume dial. For example, if I used to watch movies at -35 ish on the dial, now I feel like I have to listen at -28ish for the same volume.
Any reason why this would happen? Is it that the pre-out voltage might be low? Or maybe I calibrated Audyssey at a different volume? (I think i went higher).

If you have done a calibration with Audyssey any sensitivity difference should be compensated for. However if the difference is bigger than Audyssey can compensate for it will be lower.

Do you have an SPL meter to check with?

Also, what amp are you using?
Re-run Audyssey, I have gotten different results running it twice in a row. There could have been a truck driving by during the calibration, or your A/C kicked on, etc., that could make a difference in the end results.

Do you have an SPL meter to check with? Yes. but I'm not very motivated to connect the speakers back to the receiver, rerun audyssey and then back to the amp and rerun again.

Also, what amp are you using? Tonewinner AD-7300
@Jawaburger - Yes - maybe I should do that. I was considering it.

Most likely reason: gain/sensitivity difference between your AVR and amp. What is the input sensitivity of your amp?
What is the output voltage of your 3400?
@JonfromCB
Input Sensitivity (for rated power; 8 Ohm load): 1.5 V

What is the output voltage of your 3400? No idea
Some amps have a switch for input sensitivity. What make and model amp are you using?
Sorry, I don't know the pre-out output voltage for the 3400. Google Denon 3400 bench test to see what you get, or call Denon. Also, how long are your RCA (?) cables from the AVR to AMP?

I couldn't quickly find a bench test, but there is a thread in Audio Science Review on the 3400 stating maximum pre-out voltage is 1.2 volts. If so, it won't drive your 1.5 volt sensitivity amp to full power so be careful not to turn your volume up too far. If you want louder volume without clipping you're best bet is using an amp with a sensitivity below 1.2 volts.
Thanks guys. The cables are 3ft long so its not that. I was going to upgrade to a pre/pro at some point, so hopefully that will solve the "problem". I never listen to louder than -10, even that is rare, so i'll be ok for now.
