Voom Receiver for just OTA channels without subscription??

590 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  madpoet
I'm looking at a Voom Motorola HDTV Receiver 550. I can pick one up pretty cheap. The only reason I want it is to pick up OTA HD channels in my area. Does anyone know if his receiver will work for that if I don't have a subscription to Voom?

When I cancelled my VOOM service last week, the OTA stations continued to work (VOOM tech won't be picking up my box until March 2).

Ray:D
Someone had their box disconnected for almost 2 months and it still functioned as an OTA tuner.
Me. As long as it is disconnected correctly it works. Correctly means that it is removed from the sat dish prior to calling in and cancelling so that the card does not get the kill signal. If you ever hook it back up, it will die.
MP, how long do you wait out the kill signal?
Not sure what you mean... but I hooked the box back up to my sat line and within 2 hours it had received the kill signal and no longer worked. Then I turned Voom back on anyway ;)

If you don't have a subscription, why would you ever hook up the sat. cable? Maybe I misunderstand?

I'd hope that if Voom is going down, that they'd send down a signal that would deactivate the kill signal at some point.
Oh, I get it. You disconnected it from the dish permanently and then terminated service. Since the service was terminated there wasn't a need to reconnect the cables leading to the dish. Doh! Pulled a Homer, here.
Yep, that's it ;).
