VP question on really old source (LD)

1138 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Jason Turk
I have been thinking of getting a VP for a while and the price point on the Edge made my mind up. I do not have a high end system by any means but will I see any improvement with a really, really old Pioneer LD-V2200? I know its crap, but my wife picked it up at a garage sale for $2 so she could play her old LDs (my 704 died years ago). It was a crime to hook it up to my Sony KDS-55A2000 and I have to leave the room when she plays an LD on it but the question is - will I get any benfit from hooking it into the Edge or is it a lost cause? The LD only has a composite output.

Thanks!

Well absolutely you will get help, but remember the old saying "garbage in garbage out". Basically don't expect a lot in the way of improvement. Fortunately the Edge works will all sources, so since it will only help, worthwhile purchasing.
Jason,

Does the Edge have a comb filter in it? I read the stats but didnt see it.

Thanks!
You know I don't think I have ever been asked so I am not 100% sure. Worthwhile popping into the Edge thread to verify.
The Edge should do a pretty good job. I have a VP50pro which is the father of the Edge and it's very good.
I think the Edge will probably do about as good as anything with the limited ability of the LD as a source in general. Glimmie, do you use LD? Curious how you find it helps...I haven't tested an LD in years so I don't have a lot of first hand experience with it...

I have a rather complicated LD playback system. I use a VP50pro as the central processor for everything including Dish and BluRAY. I also have a 500 tape DVHS collection.

For LD I have a modified Pioneer CLD95 player that outputs digital video from it's internal TBC. This is not the same as SDI from a DVD player as its still a composite signal. I take that into a digital decoder to get stanbdard SDI. Then I go through a Digital Vision DVNR1000 to reduce noise and provide other image enhancement. From that I go into the VP50pro.
Hi Glimmie

I sent you a pm regarding a copy of VE on LD a couple of weeks ago.No reply?

Cheer's Steve.

Probably a bit more complex than the OP was thinking, but, how do you find the improvement?
