VSGOLF Picture Quality

I know there are several knowledgeable posters out there concerning HD transmissions. My observation: I have to believe that the golf that has been showing on VSGOLF channel [channel 604 on directv] is NOT true HD. At most, the live shots appear to be widescreen 480p at best. The canned produced pieces, however, do appear to be full 1080i HD.

Is there anyone out there that has knowledge of these transmissions?

Any info would be most appreciated.

Thanks and cheers,

John

It is usually too expensive, due to technical limitations, or a combination of both for networks to broadcast live from Hawaii in HD (which the last 2 Golf Channel events were from), and indeed these past 2 events on the Golf Channel were not in HD like you observed. I would wait for an event to come to the mainland before you make a larger observation. From what I've seen, VSGLF-HD has a pretty good PQ.
Also NBC's golf coverage is not totally HD, it is widescreen 480 for a lot of the cameras. NBC does the majority of golf and when NBC shows golf on the weekend the first two rounds on the Golf Channel are the same. I always assumed that was NBC coverage since they were set up for the weekend.

Thanks for the input. Just wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with my HDTV

I know when CBS carries the weekend, then the golf channel uses CBS equipment on Thursday & Friday, and the picture is fantastic. I guess I was wondering if the golf channel were to carry an entire event on the mainland, do they have the "kit" to produce true HD?

Thanks again and cheers,

John

Last year Golf Channel had all 4 rounds of the LPGA Championship and it was done entirely in HD, handhelds and all. However, the PGA Tour Fall Series was all done in SD wide-screen. So yes they can do full HD on their own but it could just be a logistics issue and timing. The truck CBS rents for golf also does football so it wasn't available for GC to use in the fall. Don't know what we'll get this weekend for the Bob Hope, but next week we'll get full HD for the Buick because CBS has the weekend.
