I can get both for almost the same amount of money so please help me decide quickly. My enviroment is pitch black siiting at either 9' or 11' and with a throw distance of 15'. Also I only watch DVD movies so for that reason I kind of like the Sony, but still I am open for suggestions. I am trying to get a 90" plus diagonal image...

Hopefuly this info is enough for you to help me pick

I would suggest the VT540...it has supperior resolution to the vplw400q, so even in widescreen it will be use more pixels.


The VT540 is significantly brighter as well. The VPLW400q only has 400 lumens, so if it isn't dark in your room, you will have a problem.

And, it is newer. Are you sure you can get both for the same price?

ACtually I can get the 400Q plus an extra lamp for $2800 and the VT540 for $2995. It's $200 bucks more but still close enough to my original budget.

One other thing, when the VT540 does the 16:9 is it like a direct view tv's anamorphic squeeze? In other words, my dvd player doesn't need to do dwonconversion right?

I am not sure if it does the squeeze or not. You will for sure get 16x9 in a 16x9 window, but I don't know if it does this by taking the anamorphic image and compressing it, or by downcoverting to get lower res letterboxed version.

The component, S video, and composite inputs afford aspect ratio controls. However, as with all digital projectors, it scales the input to do so. The result is 1024x576 which is actually pretty pleasing. The VT540 is one of only a few XGA digital projectors that will synch and stretch 1080i and 720p signals to the full panel such that a Panamorph or ISCO can squeeze/stretch the image into a 16:9 AR. Thus affording a 33% improvement in light and resolution.

$2800 for a Sony W400Q is a lot for that projector. Are you getting it used or is it new in the box?


I believe used W400Q's go for much less and I've seen them go on Ebay for about $2000...

Peter, he is also getting an extra bulb thrown in for that price. I think you still may be able to find new 400's at MVS but, I'm not exactly sure on this.

He is right, I am getting a new bulb plus the one with the projector that has around 200 to 300 hours. Is b stock with full 3 years warranty.

Luis, you posted above that you are getting an extra bulb...that's how I know. The 3 year warranty is a sweet deal, I think you'll be happy with this projector.
