VuDu

Quote:
dear movie watcher,

got an ipad®? If so, we've got great news for you!

Starting today, you can rent, purchase and watch movies from vudu directly on your tablet. We've optimized our website for viewing on your ipad, so you can navigate our collection of over 20,000 movies with a simple flick of your finger. There's not even a need to install an app. Instead, just add an icon to your ipad desktop by clicking the "add to home screen" button when on www.vudu.com/movies .

A few things to note:

Due to restrictions by content providers, playback is limited to sd quality. However, you can purchase a movie on your ipad for viewing in hd or hdx resolution on your tv. Just make your purchase at vudu.com then access it from your my vudu account on your vudu-enabled device. We will also seamlessly playback movies you've purchased in hd or hdx in sd if accessed through your ipad.

At this time, walt disney corporation has chosen not to permit vudu to deliver its content on the ipad. You can still browse and purchase disney content on vudu using your ipad, but you will not be able to view it on the ipad device.

To give it a try, just browse to www.vudu.com/movies from your ipad, pick a flick, sign-in to your existing vudu account and you're ready to go. Then, enjoy vudu (on your ipad!) tonight.

It would be nice if they enabled AirPlay. It's not too important today given its SD content but would be nice down the road if they go to HD on the iPad.

Do you think there's any chance Amazon Video will get an app on the iPad? Vudu seems like a competitor to iTunes, so I'm surprised it's getting the go-ahead.

Amazon on the other hand is arguably a more significant and more direct competitor, so I'm guessing probably not.

VUDU built an HTML5 app that doesn't require the app store. So, Apple didn't approve it. Kindle purchases now happen for Amazon in Safari as well.

If Amazon did build an Instant video website for the iPad, Amazon would have to encode their video in a format the iPad understands. I don't know what it's currently encoded in.

Maybe Amazon doesn't want to do it since they may release their own tablet this fall.

If Apple wanted to please normal people instead of only its fanbois, the iPad would use the same encoding everyone else does...

If Apple just supported Flash, Amazon Instant Video would work fine in the browser like it does on my Blackberry Playbook. Even in HD.

But Im still jealous Vudu doesnt work properly on the Playbook nor does it have a Boxee App.
