Wait for studio RV.3 or not?

486 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Jamey F
I'm about to purchase my first 5.1 system and have chosen all components.

Paradigm Studio 60's, CC, 20's (rear). No sub for now.

Rotel RSX-1055 + RMB-1075

Hitachi 51G500

Question is...I really want to purchase this stuff now and enjoy the system over the summer, but would it be wiser to hold off until the end of the year when paradigm is planning to release V3 of the studio line?

if you're happy with what you get off the current line.. then just go for it.. though.. a few months down the road, you may have remorse if you find out that the current line is on clearance for way cheaper than what you paid for it right now.

I personally am waiting for the v.3s... the current line's tweeter is too bright for me.
There's no way to answer that right now because there's nothing to compare with. I was going to wait also, until I read it was going to be the fall before the v.3 were going to be released. Also, prices haven't been set, so they could be more expensive. When I found a deal on a set of Studios using my Best Value Guarantee through Amex (which ends May 1), I had to jump on the v.2. If I waited, I could have ended up with speakers I liked about the same (maybe less) or paid more money, and I wouldn't be able to BVG them.

As, to your direct question, "would it be wiser to hold off until the end of the year?" If you truely like the sound offered by the v.2 speakers, and you aren't one of those people that has to have the latest/greatest even if it isn't...Buy the v.2 and enjoy. If you think the v.2 doesn't give you the sound you're looking, or you always do want the latest/greatest even when it's not...Wait and listen to the v.3. The v.3 may truely be a big improvement over the v.2, but I listened to the Studio 100's v.2 in the store. I'm accustomed to and like Paradigm's "bright/forward" sound after having a set of monitors for 6 years. The Studio 100/cc/20 set will be a VERY significant upgrade. For me to wait and maybe get something I like better for significantly more money didn't appeal to me. If you can't find a deal now, you most certainly will be able to get a great deal on v.2's when the v.3's are released, but that puts you into a waiting game. If you can find the v.2's for 20% off, I would say that's good enough not to wait for a better deal unless you are going to wait for v.3's.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I am one of those people who likes to have the latest/greatest, but I'm even more impatient :D

Where did you find your best deal on the Studio speakers? I am in the market myself and was going to use the amex to purchase. Unfortunately, there are only two places around me and I cant find for cheaper. Your help is appreciated.
If you wait for v.3, keep in mind price will probably go up as well (look at the monitor line) Is there going to be a significant sound difference? Probably not as much as we'd like to think. Like the saying goes, "there's no time like the present".:D

BTW Steve, how come no sub? For movie viewing, I think the LFE has the most significant impact.
Many stores have a one year trade up policy... Get the v.2's now and when the v.3's come out, assuming it's within the year, give 'em a listen, if they are worth it, use the trade up... It'll cost more than waiting, but waiting doesn't give you speakers now :)

BTW, the v.2's are still very awesome speakers, the v.3's would have to be a huge step up for about the same cost for me to trade in my 60's...
I'm thinking about purchasing the following speaker setup from a local dealer:

Studio 100's, CC, Studio 20's, and PW-2200.

What's a good price for this package? They quoted me 3450 (which is 500 off retail), but I may be able to talk them down a few hunded to say ~3200. Without going to Canada, could I do better?

Thanks!
100's.........$1900

20's...........$650

cc...............$500

PW-2200...$800

Total retail...$3850

Which means you are getting $400 off retail not $500. I would say 20% is about the best you could hope for. 20% off $3850 is $770 off or a total of $3080. That is the mark I would hope to reach. Buying an entire set like that, you should demand at least 15% off, and that would be $3272. If you can't get one to deal, go somewhere else.

Jamey,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've seen both 1900 and 2000 for the Studio 100's. The dealer I happened to be at sold them for 2000.
Thanks for all the replies! I think I'll try to work out an upgrade option with the dealer so that I can upgrade to the v3's if I want...but I'll purchase the v2's now.

regarding no sub, it's because I'm in an apartment and I'm worried about the neighbours, plus if I were to buy the sub, I would have to downgrade the other speakers as I'm already spending above my budget.

Steve,

I'm also looking at getting a HT system very similar to yours. I had a chance to listen to the Paradigm Studio 100's hooked up to a Rotel 1065, and they sounded very nice. Since I'll be listening to 2-channel stereo music about 50% of the time, the studio 100's are a must if I decide to go with Paradigm speakers.

I see that you listed the rotel 1055 + 1075 combo. Why not go with the pre/pro 1066 instead of the 1055 for about $200 more?

If I decide to go with the Paradigm package I mentioned above, these are the receivers pre/pros I'm considering:

-- Rotel 1065

-- Rotel 1066/1075

-- Denon 3803

-- Harmon Kardon 525

-- Harmon Kardon 7200

Anyone have experience with these connected to a set of Paradigm Studio's?

3803 is not gonna be enough to make the Studio 100s sing in 2 ch stereo... it can power them, yes. but... you're only getting 45 percent performance out of them..

If you are on budget.. i suggest taking a look at Anthem Amps..

the 2 ch amp's 649 and 999 for 110 and 210 wpc respectively... get the denon 3803s for HT.. and use the Anthem Amplifiers for 2 xh stereo listening.

Anthem's owned by the same company as Paradigm.. Sonic Frontiers.

JazzAddict,

I decided on the rsx1055 over the rsp-1066 because they essentially have the same pre-amp (use the same firmware upgrades as well!) and it'll give me an opportunity in the future to add 2 more rear channels using the redirect option.

I'm just purchased the 3803 in December. I won't have my studio 100's for a few weeks, but I will be using the 3803 to power them. I also assume that I will not be getting the most out of my Studio set without a dedicated amp, but it will be a huge improvement over the 7semk3's I am currently using that were being powered by a Yammy 992. I will upgrade to an external amp in the months ahead. I'm sure I'll post somewhere on my feelings of the 3803 and Studio 100's together when I have a chance to listen for a while.
