General guideline for front speakers are that the high frequency driver (tweeters) should be at the ear level when seated at main listening position. As for surrounds, they should be above the ear level. Any thing between 1-3' above should be fine for surrounds, feel free to experiment a bit and keep the one which sounds best to you.
Oops forgot to mention that. Ascend 170SE's for sides and rear (7.1 system).
