Wall Murals with a Hollywood theme

733 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Dcostanza
I have a 16' L x 9' H wall leading to my HT entrance, and am looking at ways to decorate this with a full size wall painting/mural.

Does anyone know of sources for wall murals with an HT theme? I found a couple of choices after hours of searching online. I was thinking along the lines of one of these themes:

Hollywood Blvd: http://imagecache2.allposters.com/im...IP/LA-06-C.jpg

or

Drive in: http://www.muralsyourway.com/gallery...MMAJMY1053.jpg

or

Movie Marquee: http://www.autographmurals.com/Produ...vie_fl_top.jpg

or even maybe this

20th Century Fox: http://www.crimelibrary.com/graphics...ry-Fox-log.jpg

But as you can see, only two of these are actual wall murals, others are just poster size prints.

I have thought about hiring an artist to paint this, but have no idea where to find such a person.

Any suggestions/pointers are welcomed.

Thanks

Curtis,

Have you thought about contacting a local university. There are plenty of "starving artist students" that might be willing to take on the task. You should be able to find one (or several) that have exceptional ability. In addition to earning some cash they also have the incentive of adding another project to their portfolio and possibly even class credit. Call the head of the Art Department if you don't know any students and see if you can work out a deal. Just a thought....

Best regards

A 16:9 wall? Hmmm.....

Have you considered projecting one of the images onto the wall (or piece of paper) and tracing it yourself?
Don,

I was going to say the same thing. Glad to know great minds think alike :D

Yes, I did think about that approach too for about 30 seconds, and then remembered that I am artistically challenged. I was the only 3rd grader to flunk art class...

How about a photo enlargement of a favorite theater image?

I did a quick search and found one company that will make a Billboard size photo enlargement for about $10 a sq ft. You could probably find a high resolution picture at at a stock picture provider that would work. They probably have software (like genuine fractal's) that allows a picture to be enlarged and still maintain some integrity. GF is a vector graphics manipulation software that does better at enlarging then photoshop. I use it to do digital printmaking.

You could just do it from the chair rail level up. So 5x15 = $750

I have no experience with something this big. But if you pursue graphics art firms that service the billboard industry you'll probably find something that you can use.

here is the one I found.

Thanks BIGmouthinDC - I'll check into that approach too.

Let me share a couple of other ideas for that hall. Get a bunch of 8x10 glossy photos of movie stars. There are plenty of stores that sell them.

Then take a pen made for writing on pictures and put your own dedication and forge a signature.

For instance get Rodney Dangerfield's's picture and write:

"Curtis, it's hard to imagine how someone with your limted abilities could build a theater this nice. Can we watch caddy shack one more time? Rodney"

Run these pictures and sayings down the wall.

Next get some concrete and make your own walk of stars with some hand and foot prints in the floor.

You could raise the floor an inch and alternate a carpeted section with a concrete section. Each of your kids would have a section. Or just make something like that for the wall

Interesting that you mention the concrete for a Walk of Fame. I have some of the tiles Skyman produced and was considering increasing the WOW factor by doing the exact same thing you mention. After being delayed at Ohare I thought I'd take a different approach. My concern was getting an even tile as well as eliminating the pain and suffering of cleaning the tiles. Going to have the tiles personalized by the people I had star tiles made. The approach I'm taking is to get similar "blank" tiles and have the people outline their hands with white paint / Permant marker and then scribe a message. When we have people over that do not have a personalized tile, I will take a erasable marker and write in the person/ couples name. At the end of the evening I'll wipe it off.

Somewhat dovetails into your idea of the unique twist of the movie star pictures. I like that idea and might have to "borrow" it.

Best regards
