Making my first big purchase with my fiancee(!), and we need some TV advice. We're moving in together in early August, but we can wait until September for a good deal.

We only really care about the following:
  • very accurate colors
  • very deep but accurate blacks
  • generally proficient with everything from standard channel surfing to Wii and Blu-Ray
  • minimal or easy calibration
  • "future proof" - plenty of newest plugs, important features, etc.

We'd like to spend less than $1000 after shipping. We almost jumped on a 42" Panny G10 for $880 (free shipping), but we read about flicker problems and backed out.

Again, this is pretty confusing for her and me we'd rather just get your suggestions for what would make us happiest. Please share any general advice or specific recommendations (model numbers, prices to jump on, etc.). Please, nothing forum illegal!

Thanks in advance, everyone! I've come here before for audio advice, so I hope TV folk are just as helpful.

My advice won't help, but you should have jumped all over the G10 for that price. If your budget is $1,000...that was your best option. I'm not sure you understand what the "flicker" is. It only happens if you engage an option on a blu ray player for 24p playback. It's not on regular programming and not on regular blu ray playing. Most people don't even use the function. It gets overhyped on here but it's a minority of people that even care about that option when you consider the thousands that buy these sets.

Oh well, it wasn't from a very reputable seller anyway. Given our time frame, I think I'll be able to find a good deal somewhere else. Thanks for the help, speedking!

Are there any new models being released before September that I should know about? I can't decipher the Rumor Mill...

In that price range the 42" G10 is the best option. Just remember that people obsess about every little thing on here. Sometimes "real world" viewing is not even considered. Labor Day should result in a sale. Just to let you know, Amazon.com is a good place to deal with as well as Cleveland Plasma, at the top of this page.

I got my 42" G10 around that price shipped from amazon. They were/are doing a promotion to get free blu-ray player. Big River FTW. I was shooting for the S1, but the price was almost the same. There isn't much difference, but the G10 does have more accurate color and slightly deeper blacks. I think the G10 looks bettet, visually speaking.

Also, I left the settings for sdtv on standard, THX for the blu. Thats as easy as it gets.

You know, now I'm thinking I'm going to try to score a 46 incher for under $1000. Online, I see this TV regularly priced for $1200, so maybe if I wait and keep my eyes peeled, it'll fall to a three-digit price. I've checked those retailers and others (google searched the forums and compiled a list of suggested companies), but thanks for the tip. If I can't find anything by September, I'll make a buy on Labor Day even if it costs a little more than I'd like to spend. Thanks again for your help, speedking.

All good things to hear! I'm hearing over and over again that Amazon is pretty sweet for TVs, so I'm checking them regularly. I'm not too concerned about Blu-Ray just yet - I may wait until Black Friday for that anyway. Also, I'm glad you think the G10 looks better than the S1 and the settings are easy set, they put my mind at ease. Thanks shwanC!

Here is an easy way to "chart" the price trends of the G10 at Amazon. Open an account, it's free and easy. After you set up your account, put the 42"G10 and 46G10 (directly from Amazon)in your cart. Every day you decide to check on the prices when you pull up your cart, it will advise you if the price went up or down and by how much(at the top of the page). You can also put the same displays(42 and 46 G10)by other vendors(6thave. Vanns, etc)in the cart as well and keep checking the difference.

The Black Friday idea is a good one, I saved $600 on a purchase several years ago....but it's a "hail mary" to get lucky enough to get a featured item on sale. A lot of times they have a pre-Black Friday sale at BB and other retailers...include Sears(yes I really mean Sears)in your search parameters...they have been offering some great deals on Panasonics...
