Want to get into seperate amps for my Klipsch RF-7 system. Need advice

2533 Views 29 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  psgcdn
Using my Denon 3806 as the pre-amp, I'm looking to get seperate amps for my speakers. I've never looked into seperates, so I don't know what brands to look for or even the specs.

For example, my speakers are rated at 200-250w max continuous, should I get amps with that much or more wattage, or is wattage all that important?

I don't think you will get the Bang for Buck going to separates unless you are going to upgrade your speakers in the future.

The RF-7 speakers are big and they can suck the 3806 dry. So you need plenty of power to power the RF-7. I am guessing that you have been "underpowering" the RF-7 for a while now, even to the point of blowing a couple of tweeters
as some people think could happen. So it would not hurt the speakers if you get one of those pro-amps that can deliver 1000W per channel
because it is better to overpower speakers
. Just kidding.

Actually, a famous amplifier manufacturer stated that in a typical room, you would need just 150w/channel, assuming speaker efficiency of 85dB. Now the RF-7 would be 98dB/[email protected] so you would actually need high power amps to play to the audience in a dance hall, club or auditorium. In your own home, I would not think you need any more power unless I am missing something ... like you live in a mansion.

The Rotel RB 1080 amp mates very well with Klipsch.
don't listen to me, see if you can get a demo on an inexpensive amp like a Adcom, Rotel, and Listen, you won't hear a difference at reference + plus levels to justify a purchase. If you want to tone down thous horns try a Sunfire amp. But the sunfire amp is only a taste item. Again, if you are going to upgrade in the future then look into a new amp, first, go and get a loaner unit and see for your self.
Actually I'm really happy with the sound in my HT as is. The 3806 brought even better calibration which made the audio far more precise than it was with the 3805(hard to be believe), movies have a very theatrical sound, and TrueHD and LPCM tracks are simply incredible. It's hard to imagine seperates making a noticable difference sound wise, but I've said that about a few audio upgrades, so who knows.

Also, I have a great CRT projector, awesome sound(btw I won't be upgrading speakers any time in the forseeable future, love the sound from them), HD-DVD and Blu Ray. Aside from seperates, I can't see any more upgrading to do, and frankly that confuses me.

Keep the 3806 as a pre/pro and add something like the Sherbourn, Parasound New Classic, Rotel, or Adcom if you are on a tight budget.

Personally, I would lean towards the Sherbourn or Parasounds over the one's I've mentioned. But, as a dealer I'm biased.
Seriously, though all these amps will be a big improvement in amplification over your receiver and can make a big difference in your HT experience.

Hey.....I would rather be "Later" then "Sooner" go USC
I use a Denon 3805 as a preamp with Crown XLS-802's to power RF-7 mains and rears. You will notice a big difference with these amps. I'm very satified with these amps with the RF-7's. Tighter bass, much improved clarity and a larger soundstage. These amps will definitely "wake up" your RF-7's. 500wpc @8ohms and 800wpc @4ohms makes them a good match with the 7's. Here's the bonus, a two channel XLS-802 costs $550 with a $150 rebate. Possibly the most bang for your buck. QSC pro-amps I've read match up well with Klipsch also. The 3806 by it self for movies will be fine but for music just won't cut it. RF-7's need significant power to make them shine.

Because seperates are supposed to be an upgrade ass.

I think you will be just fine for now with your current setup, until you become curious, dissatisfied or your money burns a whole in your pocket

A comment to be expected from someone named B&W700guy. Like a Pulliam in disguise.

Don't worry so much about Watts. The thing about the RF-7 that makes them benefit from good amplification is the low impedance dip (is it below 3, or 4 ohms? I don't recall).

You'll get lots of different advice on the Klipsch forum about this topic. I would be worth doing a search over there.

If you read the posts, he was happy with his system. So why are you giggling like a school girl?

I'm happy, and am wondering if I could be happier, thought I made that clear.

This was not a condescending remark. It was statement that I made because he seemed happy with his system. Furthermore, I mentioned trying the Sunfire amp for Taste. Many People who have Horn Speakers or Aluminum tweeters really like them because of the warmth of the amp..
