I want to hook up my 7.1 system and all I lack are the rear surrounds. I have a budget of $0 really but could get these for next to nothing. Will they be worth it for a while until I can get better replacements? I will have to mount anything I get on the ceiling because the wife doesn't want speakers in the room behind the couch.

For movies the surround backs do not get much work so you can get away with off brand speakers back there more so than some where else. However you can ruin the experience with the wrong speakers. You are better off with good 5.1 than crappy 7.1.

Your speaker placement will be different with a 5.1 system than a 7.1 so you might want to decide before you start cutting up you cieling.

Once again what speakers do you have and which do you want to get.

I wired for the 7.1 when finishing the basemrnt. Right now I have Yamaha RX-V861 JBL STAGE 6in 3-Way Floorstanding, JBL S-Center 3 way, Northridge N24 II and a Venue Series SUB10. The pyramids are going in my mother inlaw's garage sell so they coul be free or the $5 she tagged them for. If it would make it sound worse I wouldn't bother just didn't think they could be that bad!

People are laughing because you hadn't said what speakers. What Pyramids? Car speakers?

Maybe you don't need 7.1 over 5.1. What is the room size and layout?

Sorry to bring down the site. Guess I should have spent more time playing with electronics rather than chasing skirts? I don't wnat to hook them up if they will sound like garbage. They are pyramid speakers with a 3 way bass reflex. The have brackets that would allow me to mount them on my ceiling. If the question isn't up to your standards don't waste you time replying.

why are you asking the question at all? it's easy enough for you to find out whether or not they sound good or not. just hook the dang things up.

I you have the speakers it is worth doing. I wouldn't cut in to my 5.1 budget to go 7.1 if money was a tight. Even 6.1 will do. It is like alot of things it takes alot to get that last little bit of performance out of the system. If I did not have decent fronts that I moved back during my last upgrade I might have gone years at 5.1. On second thought I would have found a way to add one more in and go 6.1
