I've had two strange issues recently with projectors in the field that turned out to be customer issues.

The first one was an ECP 3100 that had no HV. I sent the customer a HV supply, and after 3 courier trips, EVERY board in the set. Still no HV. This guy was pretty good at troubleshooting, so I finally replaced the set on my dime. To somewhere way the hell on the east coast, just my luck to get a 2X high shipping bill..:(

The second one was a Sony 1031 that went dead after about a year. I sent the customer a convergence board and power supply. Still no go. The customer mucked with it for a bit as he also had electronics background, but he gave up.

I repaired the main problem in the ECP within 5 minutes. He'd installed the focus/bias board with the purple multipin connector one pin off, which sent 12 volts to the tube filaments. That shorted out the green tube. No idea what board had originally failed, all his returned boards tested OK.

I got an email recently from the 1031 customer. A friend and he dove into it again, and he'd installed one convergence connector incorrectly, causing one of the small fuses to blow instantly.

So hey, even if you're a pro, check EVERYTHING twice before you power up or blame the set (or me!)..:)

I'll be here, filing a claim with UPS. Yet ANOTHER rebuilt P 16 tube showed up with the neck snapped. The side of the box was ever so slightly pushed in, crushing the tube.

Another fine moment in shipping, brought to you by...UPS!

For the life of me I can't understand why VDC uses UPS to ship their tubes. Anyone who has seen their boxes knows how robust they arer and what kind of abuse would be required to breal a tube. It's just sickening, a thousand dollar tube broken by total idiots.

Hey Curt(ie),

99.8% of ALL the problems I encounter are usually caused by the USER! That's why I shudder to think about them changing boards and fooling with connectors. Now of course that doesn't mean that everyone that pulls a board is an idiot, but, overall, when a customer goes "inside" the projector, a problem can usually relate back to that event.:(

Bruce, What ever happened to that guy with two ECP's that had the same problem? Remember, about 3-4 months ago. Nothing anyone told him to do worked then all of a sudden gone, no more posts. Was that a case of user error?

Chip,

I think that was a case of CLASSIC user error. Once they start turning and pulling everything out, there's no telling what's going on until you actually SEE the projector yourself.

Put it between your legs and use your fingers to count to 10, then throw it.

Almost, but not quite. I've had people "gorilla" a plug, they were intent on making a square peg fit into a round hole. :D

I was setting up an XG yesterday and had to reverse the scan. The manual saw me coming becuase they labelled it as a "dummy" plug.

But see how the lego notch on the dummy plug points up in both diagrams? In real life, you have to rotate the dummy plug 180. It won't fit the way shown in the install guide.

I didn't quite try to "gorilla" it in, but I did "monkey" with it a while to try to get it to fit like the manual shows, but then gave up and attached it the other way.

I've had people some how force the keyed 4 pin 12v/5v power plugs in upside down on PC hard drives... Some idiots are beyond idiot proof..

This was a keyed connector (on the ECP) UNfortunately, it's relatively easy to insert the connector one pin off, and the one outside pin simply bends and gets the heck out of the way..:)

Gezz....it just goes to show you that Occam was right......The simplest solution is usually the answer. I have found that out a few too many times with the PJ.

It is amazing that different companies making similar products will develop such different methods. I was amazed at the difference between a Barco/Sony/Ehome in the manner of construction.
