Watching jpegs on these panels

581 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  OzMello
Finally getting my first HDTV. While my primary use would be for watching moving images (HD or SD), it seems a shame to have a big piece of glass sitting around and not use it to view my jpeg library. Hence, I'm looking for something with reasonable PC input and high res. Many of the LCDs advertised as 1920x1080 don't seem to handle anything greater than 1024 x 768 via the VGA (or DVI) PC inputs. Does the added resolution make a difference on these screens for jpeg viewing? What about plasmas? Any thoughts from this still image perspective? Thx.

you bet

If you looking at LCDs you want a set the output in 1080p and that has a DVI or HDMI input that handles 1080p. Another thing that you want to know is if the set can defeat the overscan that is used to insure that there is no border showing on moving presentations. if you can't turn it off you loose part of menu bars or the picture. Most of the newest 36- 56" 1080p sets do handle 1080p input ( just released Sharps / Mitibushi / Samsung ) I'm not totally sure of the sony specs .. And the Samsung's so far there does not seem to be a way to defeat the overscan. ( might fix sometime via firmware ) The Toshiba that is available Does NOT except 1080p input. ( they just announced one the will in the future ) ..... forget VGA ...

I am leaning to the Sharp or Mits 42"-47" at the moment but will have to look at them as there just hitting the stores now. As for Plazma the Prices are hi and i think all above 50" for 1080p

PS

There is also the Westinghouse 42"-47" no tuner and a pretty dull case but good price point The Mitsubishi has a DVI port and two HDMIs The Sharp i believe 2 HDMIs computer capable I dont like the glass border on the Sony and the extra price.

Thanks.

Which Mitsubishi are you referrring to? I've read a lot about Westinghouse on this forum and it seems to get mixed reviews. I'll have to go look at one and decide for myself regarding the PQ. It's got a healthy set of inputs (Sharp doesn't seem to care for separate PC inputs such as DVI or VGA, at least on the 42D62 model), and they claim to handle the max. resolution (unlike Toshiba). Interestingly, the Toshiba has a RJ-45 LAN port which can presumably be used to ship data like jpegs to the device.
The Mitsubishi are LT-46131 LT-46231 the 231 is all black and has more features They are due this month (sometime) there seems to be one or two on display but nothing ready to go out the door DVI and HDMI are interchangable the over scan is also referred to as 1:1 pixel mapping
