Watts

516 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  cpu8088
Ive just purchased a 6 channel x120watt amp/reciever and I am now looking to buy speakers for it.

I dont know wheather to buy 180watt or 240 watt. Since the amp can only do 120 wouldnt i be better off sticking with 120 speakers?

DO higher watt speakers sound better than same-as-amp wattage (120)speakers?

I live in a very small 1 bedroom unit withna living room of about 2.5 x 5 meters.

G-day mate;

Most speaker mfgs have a rating for their speakers, such as --recommended power to drive their speaker.---(Say,15 to 100 watts.) I would guess more speakers are blown from under powered amps then, over powering and driven to loud/hard. (Hook-up accidents not included) Amp watts are not all equal. The circuit design factors in, as well. You can get a hundred watts for 200 bucks and 100 watts for 10thousand. Believe me they both don't sound the same. Buy what you can afford or want to spend and maybe a sub to take some of the load off the receiver.--(Or don't play it to loud?)
I might get 120watt speakers to match the 120watt per channel output of my amp.
I'm looking for some small cube speakers at about 100 watts each and no less What about subs?

Would a 240 watt sub sound better @120 watts over say a 120 watt sub @120w ?
IGNORE THE WATTS!! Buy speakers that sound good to you and that you can afford. The wattage rating only tells you how much power they (not you) can stand, not what they use for normal reproduction.

k, thanks but the thing is that I live in a small town that does not have a hometheater store.

I cannot test out speakers and therfore have to go by specs.

if watts arent a true rating of a speaker then what is and why are higher watt speakers generally dearer?
Not always true. Besides, how loud something plays is no indication of how good or accurate it sounds. Most PA speakers suck.

Buying speakers without listening is terrible. If you cannot audition the speakers, you should limit your choices to web vendors who will give you 30day return privileges. Otherwise, regardless of the numerical parameters you trouble yourself with, you could end up with something you won't like. Or, you could invest in a trip to a big city for this.

What speakers are you giving consideration to? What receiver? Maybe if we know, people can offer suggestions.

This one (Legend) is built by one of your countrymen, he used to work for Linn.

I traveled the Great Ocean Road from Adelaide to Melbourne about 12 years ago. I know what you mean; when the sign says "Last Chance for Petrol!" they really mean it mate. Beautiful country, OZ!

Not to be rude, but I want to make a point.

Do not buy any speaker you havent heard first...thats ludicrous.

Take a weekend and travel to a town where you can audition speakers. When you find some you like, you can always order them to save money.

Buying speakers unheard is like getting married to someone b4 you know what they look like or even what their interests are.

Honeycomb, in my opinion, you should have selected the speakers first, and then found a suitable amp.
