Starting Monday, 5/14, at 5:00 PM. They claim to be the first in the nation for local news originating in HD. Is this right?

Maybe first in Boston but certainly not first in the nation. Many stations do local HD news.
Yay! First Chronicle and now this. Interesting it's 5pm.
KOMO-TV started doing local HD news in 1999. WRAL was full HD including field newsgathering and editing in 2001. Many markets have multiple stations doing local HD news. I'd say they are not really the first.
I believe they are going full HD for all aspects of the news. Even if it's not the first, they do such an amazing job with Chronicle, that I am excited for the news.
WVUE in New Orleans seems pretty close to this. After Katrina, they got HD cameras for the news studio, but just started broadcasting it a week or so ago. They also do HD for on-location reporting. When it is live, it is 16:9 SD, but when footage is recorded and brought back in to edit, it is HD. They still only have 4:3 graphics, but that will change.
Ken H has had an updated list of TV stations doing HD news in his HD Programming Synopsis sticky for years.

It's a bit out of date. I noticed that some stations in NY and your neck of the woods like WCBS, KCBS, KCAL and KTLA were not on the list. And of course WCVB. I realize that it's going to be very difficult to keep it current.

Check the "Is Your Local News in HD" thread for all the reports on which stations have gone HD. According to this article, http://www.broadcastingcable.com/ind...leID=CA6437665 , there were a total of 45 stations with local news in HD by the end of April. Of course, many of these stations are HD only in the studio with widescreen SD for the field and live shots, so they may not be regarded as "all HD".

It would be nice to see an updated list of stations, but it will be a challenge to maintain it.
Maybe I misunderstood what was being said. Maybe WCVB is the first in the Boston market to go all-HD. Nevertheless, it's still cool.

You also have stations like WXYZ/Detroit who are HD in the studio and select pre-recorded field reports, with the occasional 16:9 SD live field report, and the rest of them in 4:3 SD. There's precious little 16:9 outside of the studio on that station, but they're still the only one in Detroit doing any news in HD.
One added benefit of local stations going HD is that it increases pressure on syndicated and network shows to convert.

I think it also forces other stations in the market to start doing HD news as well. I know the local CBS station is planning on going HD within the year as a O&O station I believe CBS maybe mandating it.
Yes CBS is converting all of its O&Os. As is NBC. And ABC. And, eventually, Fox.

Generally they are converting when the normal cycle for replacing their cameras and other equipment hits -- every four to six years.

And despite what we would all like to believe, outside of a few days at first, there doesn't seem to be any major ratings spike when a station goes HD.

How can that be? 6x more pixels should mean 6x better ratings! Seems we are lowering our pixel to viewer ratio. Maybe they should reduced the pixels instead to improve this.

Correct. WCVB will be the first station in Boston to broadcast in HD. It goes live tonight.

Here are some photos from the set.

They've been doing tours of the studio and set all afternoon. Wow! They've got one hell of a setup over there. Everything is HD now, from the monitors (walls of them), down to the blue-screen they use for doppler. They also have a huge >100" HD projection screen as their centerpiece as well.

Looks very, very nice. Check out that second link with the slideshow posted above which shows you the set in detail. I wouldn't be suprised if this is one of the, if not the most comprehensive in studio HD set for local news in the country now.
We should get an AVS and Satguy group together and get a private tour of the facility. I'm sure they would be happy to have us.

This sounds great guess I will drop channel 7 tonight and watch channel 5 to see how it looks. I am tired of 7 anyways they just run the same stuff over and over again and everything is breaking news their act is getting old.
