I'm having an issue with certain videos where the screen will just go black when you play it, and then when you go back any videos you click from then on will be a black screen with no audio or video. the only way to fix it i can figure out is to unplug and replug the wdtv and then everything works as long as i dont click that particular video. this has happened with a few video files and i cant figure out why. one thing ive noticed is it shows a mic and the file name at the top sometimes like its trying to play an audio file, so i tried to see if thats how its reading it but nothing shows up under music. this particular file is a 24 bit DTS audio 720p mkv. since im pretty sure its the audio thats the problem.

i am starting to wonder if my player is just going defective though. i have trouble with the remote where sometimes it will just not work unless i place it inches away from the player. then 5 minutes later it works fine. i would guess thats just a simple battery problem but its been doing that for like 8 months. its not a big deal since it rarely happens and like i said it stops happening too. very weird.. well anyways about the video problem just curious if anyone knows. the player does support 24 bit dts audio doesnt it? for me its more curious not just that the file wont play but that once it doesnt play the wdtv wont let me play anything else.

also i have what i believe is the most current firmware. im considering trying a third party firmware like b-rad's and seeing if this fixes it somehow but i dont see why it would... this is the normal wdtv hd player NOT the live (just to clarify). anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also if that is the issue what tool would i need to fix it from there? And before anyone says anything. i know downloaded media is frowned upon here, but i generally only do it as a rule untill i can buy the actual blu ray. anyways.... yeah if theres a way to fix it so it will work that would be fantastic.

Here is a good explanation of the audio and video header compression enabled by the latest releases of mkvmerge

In short..header compression
Quote:
allows a muxer to keep a certain number of bytes that are identical for each frame in the track headers removing them from the individual frames. This reduces the size of the tracks significantly without altering the content as a demuxer can add the bytes found in the track headers to each frame during demuxing.

Header compression is part of the MKV specification, and the mkvmerge author felt compelled to implement this option as default. It has affected many players, and WD has just recently released a fix for the Live and Live+ models...(no help for Gen 1 or Gen 2 WDTV)

You can remux using mkvmerge with the audio and video compression off. Also, there is mkWDclean
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/pro...n32.v0.6.0.zip .

use mkWDclean (I edited my link), and that will fix it as well.

i thought i replied already.. but yeah i ran mkverge with the compression turned off on the dts and the video (and even the subtitles because it was an option and i wanted to be safe lol. was that necessary?) and it actually worked. i would have never thought it could be that simple. problems like that usually arent.... well now i know.. i have this problem in the past and just chucked it up to 'oh well i guess the player cant play it' but i REALLY wanted to watch inception again. so the file came out the exact same size too.. so why would an encoder use it?
