 Weinstein launch 3 new Labels
Quote:
The Weinstein Co. has acquired the restored version of Dario Argento's 1977 horror pic "Suspiria" for the launch of one of its three new labels.

"Suspiria," which was unspooled in a special screening during Cannes, will be released on Dimension Extreme, a label for horror, comedy, thriller and sci-fi titles. The other two labels are the Miriam Collection for restorations, prestige and foreign pics and Kaleidoscope TWC for family fare.

All three will focus on direct-to-DVD efforts but will also occasionally do theatricals. Kaleidoscope TWC, for example, will handle all upcoming Weinstein Co. family titles.

All video titles will continue to go through Genius Products, TWC's sole video distrib.

Harvey Weinstein said, "We can think of no better way to honor our mother, Miriam, than to associate her name with some of the most beloved and classic films of all time."

The first Miriam Collection release will be Oscar-nommed 1961 epic "El Cid." To follow will be Akira Kurosawa's 1993 film "Madadayo," Pedro Almodovar's 1983 movie "Dark Habits" and "The Deal," a 2003 Brit telepic about Tony Blair by the same writer, director and star of "The Queen." The label will also feature an annual release tabbed Bob and Harvey's Pick whose proceeds will go to charity.

On tap for Kaleidoscope TWC are a CG-animated "Nutty Professor," featuring voice work by Jerry Lewis, and "Unstable Fables," a CG pic produced by the Jim Henson Co. that will incorporate "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Tortoise and the Hare."

Division Extreme will release "Pulse 2," a sequel to last summer's horror pic; "Dirty Sanchez," a "Jackass"-style comedy title from Britain; and "Wolf Creek" co-helmer Greg McLean's "Rogue."

Sweet leaping lizards, this would be great. I'd love to be able to retire my Wellspring DVD.
While I admit, that an HD DVD version of Suspiria would be interestingly disturbing, I can't get too worked up over this announcement. It looks like the movies will be mostly direct-to-dvd. Pulse 2?

El Cid on DVD finally? It's only taken about a decade... After years of promises from Miramax... I'll belineve it when I see it.

It's funny that Criterion worked with Miramax years ago and actually got a LD released back in the day.

El Cid is on DVD, just not for US distribution. The quality is sub-par for a DVD. Hopefully the HD-DVD will get a nice make over.

While some people are huge fans of El Cid, particularly the dialogue and parts of the story; I don't think the movie has weathered well. The story in the movie is inconsistent and has some gaps (or jumps) that don't make any sense. Hopefully the re-release will solve those issues.
Holy f'ing crap, Susperia!!!!! I first saw this movie in college, gothic literature course, we had a guest speaker and he showed this film. I totally forgot about it. I always meant to buy it and never got around to it.

Also, did you guys know that fanboys is a weinstein film? I hope it comes out on hd-dvd.

I'd trade my Matrix set for Suspiria on HD DVD.

Suspiria is a popular Italian horror film, with a very dedicated following. It's not for everyone, I would recommend renting it first.

I absolutely need Suspiria and other Dario Argento classics on HD DVD! I'm a big Dario Argento fan. Must have bought at least 5 versions of Suspiria by now on VHS, Laser disc and DVD... Very exciting news!

Well, I'm a huge horror fan and an even bigger fan of Italian horror. In addition to that, Argento is king of Italian horror and Suspiria is by far his best film. But I have to agree that it's not for everybody. With that said, I showed it to my father years ago who had never really watched anything foreign or horror related and he still talks about Suspiria to this day.
Suspiria on HD-DVD..... I can only imagine how beautiful it would look. I'd buy this in a New York Minute. Come on Weinsteins, hear my prayer. And hook up some Kill Bill:The Whole Bloody Affair while you're at it please

I find the music to be top notch, much better than any other horror movie.
