i have the ln40a550 and i have a weird hum bar issue. It's a hum bar that presents itself over hdmi (that's all I have to test with).

It appears with my dvd player and with my dvi -> hdmi cable from my computer. When I use the dvi cable and hook it into my tv the hum bar is there, when i plug it into my dell monitor it isn't there.

I moved the tv into another room where there is a second hdtv. This second hdtv doesn't have any problems with the hum bar. When I plug my tv into the exact same plugin and use the same cables and place it in the same spot as the other tv, I get the hum bar.

This is my second lv40a550, I returned my other one, and both of them so far have had hum bars. Both made in Oct 08.

Do you think a power conditioner would help here?

i hooked up component cable (the one with red green and blue, I think it's component) and it was pretty much gone. I had to turn the backlight to 100%, gamma to 100% and brightness to 75% before it was visible.

what could cause the difference between component and hdmi?

edit: nvm, the tv broken or i have some weird magnetic field. I get the hum bar with no devices connected and I even used a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter to get rid of any grounding issues yet it still was present in the picture menu with no devices connected at all

As you have tried different plugs and devices and you see it even with nothing attached, it may be a problem with that particular run of tvs. You could try a power conditioner, I use the APC LE1200 with good results, but it may that batch of tvs is defective. I wouldn't keep a tv that has issues out of the box.
