Hey i just had my new samsung 55 9000 series installed, i got the latest dvr box from timewarner, I have the screen set at 16:9 which i believe to be the standard?? Maybe im wrong, but when viewing hd channels its fine. When viewing non HD channels the picture size is smaller it has 2 thick black frame tyoe bars on both sides of the picture left and right can anyone help me or know why its like this.

On my other tv which is also samsung in my room, its always set at 16:9 and its fine on both HD and normal channels. The only thing with that tv is when watching hd the tv guide menu gets smaller when on hd channels but when u click to play the channel it works properyl and is full screen,

any help appreciated thanks!

There is no standard - 16:9 TVs are a compromise, its in between movies (2.39:1) and traditional tv (4:3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image)

Several standards are used http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_...and_television
hey thanks for your input do you have any idea, how i can get it like my other tv and for it to work at full screen no matter what channel its on..? The other is set to 16:9 and my cable plays full screen on hd and regular, the only thing that wont on the other tv is the tv guide on hd channels.

thank you
It's not that aspect ratio setting that's the problem, it's the absence of 4:3 stretch being enabled either on the TV side or the cable box side of the equation. Search the menus for wide, wide-zoom type settings on the TV - most people like to have the TV do that bit of picture manipulation. Cable boxes usually have a sub-menu function you can only get at when the box is off and you hit the Menu button. That's the way Comcast works on their Motorola boxes. I believe the Scientific Atlanta boxes of other providers work similarly. Google the model number of your box and add some key words like "4:3 stretch" or "picture format" and see if you can home in on the hacks or find the operations manual.
hey thanks yes it was the dvr settings, hey do you recommend native or 1080i for the output settings what are most of you guys using?

Whatever looks best to you is usually the right answer.
Ive chose native as it changes automatically so if its on SD channel it plays at its native output, if its on hd channel it changes to its HD output 1080i or whatever maybe the native on that channel may be.

The only thing now is, changing between SD and HD presents a couple of seconds of darkeness and silence and i googles the model of the new dvr and seen other people have that problem while in native but i also had it before i switched to native.

It goes dark and then displays in the right hand corner what the output is such as 1280x1080i 60hz or whatever then channel comes on. its a small issue but annoying...

Does anyone know what channels output at 120hz, i wanna see something in 120hz.. when inserterted the blu ray it played at 24hz is that normal?

thanks

No channels broadcast at 120Hz. They are SD 480i/60, HD 1080i/60 or HD 720p/60

When a program "filmed" with a SD camera is broadcast on a HD channel the broadcaster adds black side(piller) bars to avoid distorting the image by stretching it.
I have 2 TW DVR's and 2 Samsung c8000's.

My cable box settings are as follows:

Picture Size- Zoom

Output resolution - 1080i

Aspect Ratio- 16x9

The Samsung TV Picture size is set to 16x9

I am happy with this. I almost NEVER watch non-HD programs.
