i was informed of a funny thing that happened the other day while the wife was watching tv.

it seems the tv blinked off and on real quick. then when the tv picture came back on the audio from the receiver was full blast and wouldnt turn down. the whole system was turned off, then back on, and all was well. The only thing i can think of would be some type of power surge. anyone have any clue? electronics do funny things when they get a bump.

Are they connected by HDMI? Could be some HDMI CEC going funky.

LOL guys.

yeah the speakers seem to have lived through it. i havent run any sweeps but it all still sounds good. if it happens again ill have to put in a safety device in the stream. shut the stuff down automatically via high db level.
maybe some fast blow fuses on the speaker cables or something.

Same sort of thing happened to me once, what were you watching? I was trying to put on the fireplace channel, yes, the fireplace channel, on cox digital cable. Screen flickered and got a very very loud pop, hiss kind of sound. Wife screamed, as did the downstairs neighbors. I thought everything had blown, but all was ok...

i dont know what the wife was watching at the time, but i have been thinking. since none of my gear was damaged it was probably just the HDMI running to the tv. for some reason the cable box sent the audio to the tv via hdmi and the cable box audio is set to full. this would create some loudness that wouldnt be controllable through the harmony one remote. hence not being able to turn it down. it also wouldnt damage my system speakers.

if its a hdmi cable box glitch, it will happen again, and i will find out exactly what happened. if it is hdmi then i will just hook the box up via component cables. that would put an end to that glitch.

Using component and optical might not be a bad idea. I am starting to not trust satellite or cable boxes very much to not have glitches with their HDMI compatibility.

You should never have any issues when changing channels or the problem you had by going that route.

Most receivers allow you to set a max dB. I'll bet your Arcam has that feature...

John

im already using analog for sound from the set top box.

im going to look into setting a max volume on the arcam. i believe you are right that it does have this option. I know it has a max volume for when you turn it on as i have already set that option.

thanks for the ideas guys.

I used to have the Arcam receiver. I never had mine go to full vol., but I did see glitches where the controlling firmware would lock up and require a power cycle reset. I never knew what caused it but I didn't run anything through the HDMI of mine. It was connected only with audio connections.

the hdmi on the arcam avr350 is only a pass through hdmi switch.

i dont have the set top cable box hooked up via hdmi to the receiver. the hdmi from the cable box goes straight to the tv. only the analog from the set top box goes the the arcam receiver.

i dont have a digital connection from the set top box hooked to the arcam as i dont like the digital pulse/noise/thump (or whatever you want to call it) i get between channel changes using the digital connection. i also dont like my sound changing all the time. i like a nice constant movie mode which the arcam does very nicely converting the analog to a movie mode.

ive never had an issue where i had to power cycle the arcam.

i seriously doubt it was an arcam problem since the discussion here. its pointing more to a problem with the set top box hdmi running to the tv. its just some sort of fruit loops type of thing.

I have an update if anyone is interested. It finally happened when i was home.

the problem is a HDMI thing.

when i was changing the resolution on the cable box the other night from 1080i to 720p the volume did go full blast on me. BUT, it was the tv speakers only. For some reason the setting on the tv to turn the tv speakers off gets bypassed by the HDMI. when i switch the tv speakers setting to 'ON' then back to 'OFF' the tv speakers go back off.

this problem will only raise its head during some type of secondary HDMI connect, meaning it doesnt happen when the box is first turned on. It only happens in certain instances like when you do something with the settings causing the HDMI to reconnect. It also seems like this will be labled as a tv bug and not a cable box bug as i have a feeling the cable box is putting out audio on all connections at the same time.

there may be a firmware fix for this but im not going to be updating the firmware on the tv just to fix this once in a blue moon audio problem that can be fixed faster by changing a cable. to bad i couldnt get to the speaker wires or id clip the dang things.

again thanks for all the ideas and help people.

EDIT- found this on the samsung thread from 2008 years ago. it took two years for this issue to raise its head.

Quote:
From Samsung Firmware page:

* This firmware will correct the following phenomenons some units may experience.

-. Intermittent audio drop out

-. AMP(Auto Motion Plus) stuck

-. do not memorize ''SRS'' setting

-. The audio comes from speaker when loading the CD(Game title)
though ''Internal Mute'' is on(speaker is off)

If that's not the issue, I'd suspect the HDMI handshake between TV & Receiver. Possibly even the cables.

Have you tried connecting with component cables instead of HDMI from Sat box or DVD?

Last resort is open a ticket with Samsung, and let them send a tech out.
