Westinghouse LVM-42w2 [email protected] on DVI2 -- Not Supported!?!

1707 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  seano
I'm having an issue with the DVI2 port of my LVM-42w2. It is losing sync and going blank then flashing back on and then going blank and so on. The behavior is not consistant and the flashing period can be anywhere between seconds and hours between sync'd and blank.

I do not have this issue using the same source with the DVI1 port.

The source is a computer driving [email protected]

Now here's the crazy part:

When I spoke with Support Supervisor over the phone he informed me that [email protected] was not supported on DVI2.

My question to you Westinghouse owners:

1) Does [email protected] work for you on DVI2?

2) Have you been told that DVI2 does not support [email protected] by westinghouse?

All of the manuals for the LVM-42w2 clearly state that [email protected] is supported on DVI1, 2, VGA and HDMI.

If others are not seeing this problem then I just have a problem with my set and need a new scalar card.

If others *are* seeing this issue and being told that this documented mode of operation is not supported then there's a larger issue.

Anyone having DVI2 issues?
Find the other thread for sparkles over HDMI/ DVI2. I have hot pixels, sparkles over both.
The tech might be confused; the original LVM-37W1 doesn't support 1080p/60 over both DVI ports but all the 06 LVM models are supposed to.

Its right there on their web site.

That's what I initially thought - until I saw Zoglog's post in another thread:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&post8562261

From Westinghouse:

"We are currently looking in to 1080p not being supported on one of the DVI ports. This may be a change that is being implemented.

Specifications of our units are subject to change without nocice.[sic] "

!!!

Without notice indeed! They marketed and sold a TV that had 3 digital 1080p ports and subsequently changed the spec to 1 digital 1080p port!

Changing a weight or dimension spec is one thing, but changing one of the most significant features of the set - WTH?

Reminds me of the HP Jornada Class Action Lawsuit. HP claimed that their Jornada handheld had 16-bits of color - but was later found to have only 12-bits. The action forced HP to accept the return of the units with full refund to the owners.

I spent a lot of money on this set because I knew that I'd have a 1080p DVR (computer), a 1080p DVD player, and a 1080p gaming machine. It was my "future proof" television... and supporting 1080p on so many ports put Westinghouse well ahead of their competitors, or so I thought.

I don't think that "Specifications are subject to change" is an adequate - or legal - response. If it were, then it stands to reason that they could change the contrast, response time, pixel resolution, heck - even the screen dimension at any time.

Any laywers out there want to make some money? This one seems almost too easy.

I guess we'll see if Westinghouse actually decides to "change" their specification...

Thanks! To me this means that my TV just has a problem. I'm still concerned that Westinghouse is considering a spec change - rather than a repair. This action sets a bad precedent for any other problems that we have with our sets.

We'll see what happens.

That's a novel way to address problems in production units, just change the spec after the fact. If that was a first tier company they would be flogged and the article would be at the top of the digg's.
I have had dvi-2 problems on two sets now.

frist one was firmware 1.11 date 2006-2-9.

-originally this set would run 1920x1080 on dvi2 as that was the first port i decided to plug into when i got the thing on my table (closer side to pc). But it was soon evident that there were problems, on res change i could not get it to run stable again at 1080p. In the end 1080p was out of the question on that port, dvi1 running fine. Didn't check hdmi since i have no cable converter for that.

second set is firmware 1.00 (!) date 2006-6-27 (just picked it up about 2 hrs ago)

-tried dvi-1 and there are no real issues, something strange initially at boot but i haven't seen that yet. no hdmi again due to cable-lack. dvi-2 does not display 1080p, i get 'signal out of range' message displayed by the set. When i set up the res on dvi-1 to something small (1152x864) i can swap to dvi-2 and it will run. I tested a few resolutions on dvi-2 this way including 1152x864, 1280x1024, 1600x900, and finally 1920x1080 where the set failed.

This is a real pain in the butt now. I waited until my local BB had the damn set in stock and it seems like it was for nothing. I think if i can't get dvi-2 to work I'll return the set.

my gfx card is a gigabyte 6600gt GV-N66T128VP. (video bios 5.43.02.66)

I've used a dvi-d dual and single link cable

nvidia forceware 91.31

initial tests were at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz (no driver fiddling)

some more info is that a friend of mine with the same set, but firmware 1.16 is able to run on both ports no problem. he's got an ati radeon 9700pro agp.

also for some reason this second set doesn't display the 59Hz option for 1920x1080 in the 'classic' style menu of the nvidia forceware drivers (res menu). I was not 'treating the monitor as an HDTV' with the forceware drivers at the time.

***breaking news! (even before i posted this thing!)

i just got dvi-2 to work by doing some last ditch timing changes through the forceware

procedure:

1) find stable alternate timing on dvi-1,

2) swap to dvi-2.

3) if result=N.F.G. goto 1

861B 1920x1080 @ 59.94Hz P was the winner here.

OSD confirms 1080p (H 67kHz, V 60Hz)

stable resolution switches.

looks like i might be able to take the protective screen cover off this one.

on an aside 861B looks to be Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) CEA-861B, and i'm in over my head now so i might just ignore the fact that the hdmi could be useless on a set top box of some sort, or gaming unit. no way for me to test it really anyway.

Make sure your DVI cables are under 20 feet in length. Any longer than that would require a signal booster or else you would end up with sparkles.

I have 6 foot cables.
