What 8X media work in the LiteOn 5005?


I picked this up for $20 w/remote and figured I'd let my 8-year old son use it to record, but it's gagged on everything I've thrown at it but CD-Rs and DVD-ROMs. I can't find any 4X media locally and don't really want to shop online for discs for a a machine I might not be keeping. Besides, if it will only do 4X media, those will be impossible to find before too long anyway. I did the firmware upgrade and the 3 hr recording/macro disable mod already, if that makes any difference.

Are you saying you got a Lite on 5005 for only $20? Aren't those things like $199? I thought they were a few months ago.


Anyway, I got a 5005 and use nothing but 8x in it. Actually, I have some 4x too but they both work. I've tried TDK, Memorex, Nexxtech, Sony, Verbatim and they all work. Sometimes it has trouble with the batch. For example, CMC Magnetics or Ritek made Memorex no problem but I've got some with just numbers or some unknown company and it doesn't seem to like those Memorex.


With the 5005 I get the cheapest disks I can and just use those. So, if you tried both + and - disks from a number of different companies and nothing works then maybe it's the machine but from my experience my takes 4x and 8x speed disks.

Yes, I'm saying that I got a 5005 for $20. I'll try one of those brands (but not Memorex, nothing on earth justifies buying those) and see what happens. Thanks for the recommends.

Check to see if there is firmware update for that drive. I patched the one in my pc that formerly did something around 3X and it now burns 8X without a hiccup ... knock on wood.
