With new TVs becoming HDMI 1.3 capable, are STBs going to be "upgraded" to receive and transmit HDMI 1.3 to these new TVs? Any and all input would be appreciated. -Bill
It's not possible to "upgrade" existing STBs with HDMI 1.3. HDMI 1.3 requires new silicon inside the box. The existing HDMI silicon is soldiered to the motherboard.
Next-generation cable STBs shipping in 2H 2007 and 1H 2008 will incorporate HDMI 1.3.
HDMI 1.3 doesn't get you any new functionality for cable or satellite, aside from the possibility of improved lipsync ability with future HDMI 1.3 receivers. Cable content does not make use of "deep color" or the new audio codecs -- you will not get a better picture or audio with HDMI 1.3 STBs.
