What are a Canadian's best options for speakers with a $500 budget?

Good Morning All,

I've recently become interested in the having my own home theatre and started off by purchasing a projector.

I'm currently in school, so the budget is both very relevant and somewhat limited.

Due to that, I was creeping the screen DIY forum in order to build my own screen and save some serious dough.

It helped so much that I thought why not try to seek wisdom for another crucial part of my HT build, so here I am.

I've got an LG BP530 blu ray player, a BenQ W1080st Projector and a Pioneer VSX-523-K Receiver(the receiver was just purchased and is not yet setup)

The current setup is an LG HTIB which is by no means legendary but it did the trick when I was in an apartment; now that I've got a house, I'm looking to upgrade.

The room with the projector is aproximately 12' wide by 35' long with 8' drop ceilings.

The seating distance is approximately 12' from the screen.

Sorry for the information overload I just want to make sure you have all of the information in order to advise me accordingly.

As the title states, my budget for speakers (L/C/R & Surrounds) is $500 after shipping but before tax, and a sub is not necessary yet but would be a nice bonus if you could fit it in that budget; I do intend to purchase one at a later date if I dont get one now.

I can buy from Best Buy or Futureshop locally or I can order from Amazon.ca (would get the trial "prime" membership to get free two day shipping from Amazon)

I'm ok with DIY speakers as well if that's my best option but my wood-working skills are not good enough that I'd want to make my own cabinets so that will mean shipping costs might make this option moot.

To give you an idea of what I have been looking at I'll post links to two systems I was thinking about.

Both systems get decent reviews but I figured you guys/girls would know the best way to maximize every dollar I have to spend.

First system is a Fluance ES system where I would wall mount the LCR and have the surrounds either on a stand or on end tables.

Second system is by Energy, I dont know anything about it, except that it fits the budget.

If there is anything that I have missed, or that you need to know please feel free to ask.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Rob

Just found this on Amazon.ca

http://www.amazon.ca/Jamo-WENGE-5-Piece-Theater-System/dp/B00AX7DRPA/ref=sr_1_27?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1392394540&sr=1-27&keywords=home+theater+system

Ive never heard of Jamo before but it looks identical to the Energy speaker set I linked to in my first post and it has the same specs but for $150 less......

Is Jamo the U.S. equivalent of Engery in Canada?

Also for $350 i could afford to add a sub for $150-$200, does anyone think this might be a viable route for me to take?
Both Jamo and Energy were acquired by Klipsch (before Klipsch was itself acquired by Audiovoxx), so my guess is that they are identical.

Your biggest bang will be to splurge on a sub later.

I have bookshelf speakers, that weigh as much as them towers.

However, they can be just what you desire/need with that budget.

The owner of them companies, like to play the re-badge game.

For my curiosity and so I may start looking into it, what would you consider "splurging" on a sub and do you have any recommendations?

I am glad to hear that this should fit the bill and under budget no less.

To both of you, thanks for the quick responses and for not telling me to just raise my budget.

That being said, now I know where to turn when the time comes that I have more money than I know what to do with.......or atleast enough to buy some serious equipment!

Status update: I pulled the trigger on the Jamo set this afternoon for $350 and unfortunately shipping wasnt free but it was only $6.00 so all in all $356 for that set seems like a good deal.

They are already listed as shipped, so I will update again once I receive them and get them setup.
Nice!

Nice budget subs start at $350 to $500. But DIY is really to way to go if you don't want to spend much. Find a suitable flat-pack kit, assemble it, paint it black!

After much research....mostly on this site, I came across myriad of comparisons/reviews and many of them mentioned the Lava LSP12 for budget minded individuals and they stated it was around $340 USD but I've found that they have lowered the price and after reading the loooong thread here: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1275777/lava-subs/1350

i've decided to pick up one of these as they fit the budget.

Worst case scenario, they arent powerful enough for my 3500 cubic feet of space in the basement and I could either order a second or send it back with their 30-day return policy.....sounds like a no brainer to me, but feel free to chime in if you know of a better sub for $170

Ok first off, you can see the system I had previously, and even though this Jamo setup isnt top of the line, neither is my pioneer receiver, this already sounds head and shoulders better than the HTIB i had before. It's certainly missing a bit on the low end of the frequency spectrum, but that's what the sub is for, more on that later.

Keep in mind, I'm obviously no audiophile but the biggest difference I noticed was that I could actually hear voices clearly, the system was almost a bit too strong on the high end but I honestly think that's just because I'd been listening to the HTIB for the last 5 years. being able to hear what people are saying without having to crank the stereo to obscene volumes is a welcome change.

The next thing i noticed, and this certainly has to be due to an actual dedicated receiver as opposed to the HTIB DVD player/receiver i had previously, but the surround sound was actually noticeable in different zones. I could hear some surround before but it was more of a left or right difference and the surround speakers were just ambient noise, now i can actually hear footsteps come up from behind me on my left and go all the around (assuming the video on screen matches those actions).

I also tested it out for a very limited amoutn of time listening to music and it sounded pretty good, but when it comes to music, i just want something that will play sound when people are over, so i wouldnt trust my judgement in regards to music quality/clarity/accuracy. It went loud, and didnt distort so thats mainly what i was looking for.

So I ended up buying the LavaSubs LSP12 but they couldnt honor the $170 with free shipping since I live in Canada, so we worked out a deal with shipping and duty included for less than $300, so i know that puts me over budget, but I figutred it was a deal I couldn't pass up.

The sub was louder than expected, especially since my basement room is so large, i thought i might have trouble hearing the bass, but the sub blended in nicely with the rest of the system.

When i set the Auto configure option on my receiver, it set the subwoofer to -8db eventhough i only had the gain half way.

All in all, for right around $600 not including the receiver, I am very happy with the system and would reccommend this setup to anyone with a very limited budget.

The only thing that made me angry is the next day, i found the same set online for $250 plus tax and shipping, so it would have worked out to be about the same, but Best Buy also put the "Energy" version of these speakers on sale for $300, so again it would have been about the same but I wouldnt have had to wait for shipping.
